How much do you roughly spend on Christmas chocs for your household at xmas?
I love Hotel Chocolat but it's bloody expensive.,

Depends if it's just some to share or a present. I'd only buy posh ones as a present.

Athenen0ctua · 08/11/2022 19:40

I'd get Bendicks bittermints for me and DS (£3-£5 depending if I can get them on offer).

mam0918 · 08/11/2022 19:42

What like in stockings?

Probably about £15 between the 5 of us.

I dont just buy 'random' chocolates.

3WildOnes · 08/11/2022 19:43

Probably two tubs of quality street at £5 each. And a couple of boxes of Lindt and £6 each.

3WildOnes · 08/11/2022 19:44

This doesn't include stockings or gifts!

JaninaDuszejko · 08/11/2022 19:44

I'm very much of the 'spend as much as possible on the smallest box possible' type (otherwise I'd be the size of a bus) and while the DC get things like Tony Chocolonely and Lindt chocs in their stockings I don't buy a big box because I'd just eat it all.

stuntbubbles · 08/11/2022 19:46

For my dad, as a present, up to £50. The rule of thumb here is that the more you spend, the smaller the box: like, six to nine tiny, artisan nonsense chocolates in a very chic box. Like being gently and artistically mugged.

For consumption, I’ve never kept track but usually a mix of mountains of Roses, chocolate coins for stocking (£1), and a few in-between boxes of things more premium than Roses but nowhere near the eye-watering Dad chocolates: chocolate gingers, chocolate orange peel, rose and lemon Turkish delight, some halva, chocolate brazils, etc.

pinkksugarmouse · 08/11/2022 19:47

There’s just DH and me. We ordered a hotel chocolat sleekster box each so that’s £49 and £7.50 for the mint batons. It would be £56.50 but there was some sort of discount.

Yes that’s very expensive but we don’t do other Christmas sweets, treats, snacks. My husband eats his over a month and I take 2 months. It’s one of our Christmas presents.

Its definitely quality vs quantity in our house. We generally don’t have snacks and sweets in the house. It’s just not our thing.

WellTidy · 08/11/2022 19:48

To have around the house - this year, I’m buying the biggest box of Bendicks mints, and a tub of either heroes or celebrations. Plus some florentines, and chocolate brandy snaps. We will make fudge.

We all receive chocolate as gifts from family/friends and I put it in everyone’s stockings too, so there is more than that from Christmas Day onwards.

ping78 · 08/11/2022 19:57

I can give a very honest and accurate answer as I've just written down a list, £64.95 this year, that's tubs, Ferraro rocher, and mostly Hotel Chocolat (just opted for favourite selectors this year).

wibblewobbleball · 08/11/2022 19:59

This year I am not! We get gifted lots!

Choconut · 08/11/2022 20:02

Do people really think Hotel Chocolate is quality chocolate?? To me it tastes nearly as bad as Thorntons.
Try Artisan Du Chocolate for proper quality chocolate.

We just get a couple of celebrations/hereos tubs for Christmas though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/11/2022 20:08

This yer , I haven't eaten chocolate since early May but I'm going to treat myself over Christmas , some Ladiks chocolate liquorice if I can find it , and some Niederegger plain chocolate marzipan.

T've bought Hotel Chocolat for DS and DD

Solderingon · 08/11/2022 20:24

Nobody has mentioned constantly spending £1 on terrys choc oranges in the run up as you keep eating them... just me?

I like to add a Tony's chocoloney bar to presents and stocking fillers from the Chocolate gift company (the packaging is amazing).

So honestly probably £40+ which given that it's all low/mid range stuff is a bit eye opening.

ping78 · 08/11/2022 20:26

@Choconut not sure I'd call it "quality" but I like it 🤷‍♀️

HeadacheEarthquake · 08/11/2022 20:28

Just a fiver on a quality street tub - I'm a tutor so the rest arrives as gifts in the last week and it's always good quality stuff too! Same with wine and smellies.

MsMiaWallace · 08/11/2022 20:28

Any other recommendations for quality choc then?

snowmanshoes · 08/11/2022 20:36

I don’t think there is any need to knock hotel chocolat - a lot of people like it. If it’s not for you buy other ones.
Thuscyearcinstead if ‘house’ chocs I’ve bought for the individual

GettingStuffed · 08/11/2022 20:48

We'll get Benedick's after dinner mints. Although I want to make peppermint creams with DGS as a present for his mum

My go to is Bendicks. A friend had some Charbonnel et Walker truffles that were lovely but I think quite pricey.

But there are so many different types of chocolate you can buy from there, it's not really comparable to the ubiquitous milk chocolate that most of Thornton's chocs are covered in..sounds like a needlessly snobby comment. Not everyone can afford the really high end stuff, and HC is pretty decent stuff which caters for all tastes from kids milk chocolate to 100% cocoa and everything in between.

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 08/11/2022 21:32

About £5 on the bags of chocolates from Aldi or Lidl. I don’t like them but the DCs do.

And £1 on DHs Terrys Choc Orange. This year was £2.50 though as I panicked after not being able to find him a dark chocolate one a few years ago so bought the first one I saw in Booths.

Don’t buy the tubs I think they are a waste of money and don’t buy anything I’d like, again the prices are eye watering on Christmas chocolates, I can’t justify spending the money, but also I am far to overweight so don’t want anything I like in the house.

Stocking is a whole different thing though, they get filled with chocolates for the DCs, I still try and buy as cheap as possible though.

purplerainlondon · 08/11/2022 21:43

I brought Artisan Du Chocolate for my fiancés birthday the other day and in all fairness it taste awful!

Runnerduck34 · 08/11/2022 21:47

Family of 6, large metal tin ( if I can find one) of quality street plus one each of the plastic tubs of celebrations, roses and hero's.( these need hiding and aren't opened until school break up)
Selection box in each DC stocking.
Plus mini chocolate Santa's or similar for advent calendar.

So you eat celebrations and hero’s but think hotel chocolat is poor quality. 😳

Each to their own but in many countries celebrations and hero’s wouldn’t be able to be labeled as chocolate. There is so little cocoa in them they would be called candy. I personally don’t like candy but if you do great.
