Doing my own stocking this year

Peach2021 · 08/11/2022 10:37

Father Christmas fills the stockings in our house, and I'm newly divorced so will need to do my own this year or DC will notice that I haven't got one.

Inspired by another poster thinking of presents to ask her mum and dad for, what small and relatively inexpensive, but treaty, things would you put in your own stocking?

TIA.

Earrings or a ring
Vouchers
Essential oils

myexisawanker · 09/11/2022 06:33

I always do this as single parent it's fab

I also get myself a proper gift for under the tree - my favourite bit about Xmas these days :)

Fireballxl5 · 09/11/2022 06:38

A cotton handkerchief, my dm always did when we were little. Or fancy tissues.
My friend always got a toothbrush.
Chocolate orange buy when they’re only a £1.
Emery boards.
Compact mirror.
Nail brush.
Nice soap.

PermanentTemporary · 09/11/2022 06:44

Ooh I might do this. Christmas is going to be, erm, shit low-key this year so it would cheer me up.

Also it may sound rubbish but you can also wrap things from around the house and open them on the day.

Think I'll go for-
Trashy blockbuster novel from the charity shop
Chocolate coins
Apple and tangerine
Party blower and party popper - I have some from old party bags I think

Tatiepot · 09/11/2022 06:48

Oh…everyone, so many lovely ideas, thank you! And yes it’s a real stocking, just big enough to take a paperback book, the perfume is ordered and so is the chocolate, some posh socks sounds nice… I love the idea of a theme, will maybe do that next year as I’ve already bought DS 8 most of his presents.

It’s been a tough year so opening these - which I may well have forgotten buying by then (the idea of getting stuff through the year is great!) will be a fab start to a new sort of Christmas and a happier life 🥰

Singleandproud · 09/11/2022 07:04

@woohoowoohoo Im also a single parent and literally do this every year. I buy things I want but don't need right now, like new books etc. Wrap them when I buy them and put them away. The when Christmas comes it is an actual surprise.

When Dd was smallish and still believed in the elf I would talk about the things that I wanted (related to the Hamilton musical one year, soundtrack, accompanying book etc) and then the elf would drop the presents for me into her bedroom with gift wrapping supplies for her to give me. She was so excited, kept the secret and proudly handed them over on Christmas morning knowing she and the elf had got me exactly what I wanted.

bluechameleon · 09/11/2022 07:15

I'd buy nice socks that fit (I often get standard women's 4-7 and they dont fit my 8.5 feet), earrings (not expensive, just Accessorize/Next), mini bottle of Baileys, Tony's or Cocoa Loco chocolate, fudge or cocnut ice, new gloves and purse because people keep buying me ones I don't like much, pretty notebook, crossword book.

AdaColeman · 09/11/2022 07:42

I've done this for a few years now, I buy a couple of things each month from about September onwards.
Things I usually get...
Tins of M&S cocktails
Miniature Baileys & glass
Small box of chocolates
Fun Christmas earrings
Pretty notebook
Diary
Hair clips/scrunchy
Paint tin or craft kit
Keyring
Christmas biscuits
Kitchen gizmo eg egg timer, lemon juicer, toaster bags

Velvian · 09/11/2022 08:54

That is so sweet and an ingenious idea @Singleandproud . How lovely for your DD.

mondaytosunday · 09/11/2022 08:57

Really nice smelly soap, miniature liquor bottles (like flavoured vodka), chocolates, Christmas socks, pretty tissues, honey lip balm...

Apollonia1 · 09/11/2022 09:14

I'm a single parent, and never thought of getting myself a stocking!
My twins are only 2.5, but I might start this tradition this year. Great ideas on thread.

woohoowoohoo · 09/11/2022 09:40

Liquor bottles are a great idea . I can also then put dd off the idea of ever drinking spirits by letting her have a sip of them neat (she's 14, so this is fairly topical in our house !)

I do that too. Order from Amazon or wherever; when things arrive i put in a special box unopened. By the time Christmas arrives the items (usually secondhand books, craft supplies, stationery, garden seeds/tools, makeup) are a delightful surprise. I just wrap right over the outer packaging

PuttingDownRoots · 09/11/2022 10:48

My DDs also like being given a fiver and being let loose in B&M or similar. (Not a single parent, but DH is in the Army so we've had many birthdays/Christmas/mothers day when he hasn't been able to take them shopping).

redtulip12 · 09/11/2022 12:08

Where do you all buy miniature bottles of alcohol from - couldn't see any in my Tesco? Tia

YuliaJollyberry · 09/11/2022 12:15

Love the ideas for achieving the surprise element. I think I’d buy in the January sales, wrap and squirrel away and forget what’s in them. And definitely an advent calendar under the tree to open all at once.
I don’t do my own but have just spent a very pleasant couple of hours online overstuffing my virtual stocking. Enjoyed it as much as doing other family members which was unexpected.

For a surprise:
• I wonder if I could go to a beauty counter and ask them to select a lipstick in a flattering to me shade without showing me it. This is what husband did so it’s just cutting out the middleman. Bonus they’ll probably gift wrap it too. Charlotte Tilbury £26 or Mac Mini £14.
• How Novel mystery gift wrapped book perhaps the spellbound one £8.99, NOTHS. Or I could randomly pick a charity shop book and try not to see the title £1.
• Love Cocoa chocolate 2 bar subscription box to try £7.20, I’ve wanted to try this for awhile, subsequent boxes are £9 so pricey.
• Luckydip crystal bag Little £10 or MinI size £5 from crystalwitchuk Etsy. I can never have too many crystals.

A little luxury:
• Cashmere socks in camel £36 The White Company (have hinted for years for a pair of cashmere socks). Or a little less luxurious teddy fluffy socks in blush £7 in Dunelm.
• Glossy mag rolled up and not thumbed through before choosing £5ish or even un-glossy £2ish.
• Nitiraj colour champa incense sticks £4.95; Mysore Sandalwood bar soap £1.45; Georganics natural dental floss peppermint £4.90, all from yogamatters.

I need a new mug as it’s always my favourite getting broken:
• Cosy knit mug set in blush (bonus comes with hot chocolate and marshmallows) £5 B&M.

Random bits I’ll enjoy or use:
• Make your own dream catcher £1.50; Mindfulness puzzle word book £3; Hogwarts A6 size notebook £1; Crystal design top pen (random selection so if I can wrap it in tissue without looking will be a semi surprise) £2, all from The Works. Penguin Spanish phrase book, £5.99; Woodland garden mix native wildflower seeds £2.99.

Edibles and traditions:
• Original Candy Co sour cherry candy cane £1.20; Iced Gingerbread man £1.50ish; candy whistle 18p; pink sugar mouse 80pish; a few nuts in shell £1; Chocolate coins 80pish; Chocolate orange £1; Miso paste soup sachets £1.70; cocktail can, strawberry daiquiri £1.75.

That lot comes to almost £136 or £76 with the less expensive options, it soon adds up. Was a bit shocked at the totals, I did get more than a bit carried away admittedly. Certainly wouldn’t be finding the advent calendar under the tree.

ChristmasCwtch · 09/11/2022 15:27

@redtulip12 the mini bottles are in the seasonal aisle at my local Tesco, not in the booze aisle

RuthW · 09/11/2022 17:07

A little tip for next year. By things for yourself in the first half of the year. Wrap and put away. You will have forgotten what you have by Christmas

ChristmasCwtch · 09/11/2022 17:53

I added lots of bits to my JL basket last night after reading this thread… today I popped into the app and had forgotten what I’d selected 😂

Excellent; this is what I do. Etsy items, cosmetics, gardening stuff, books -- it's fun to get little treats. Need not be costly, either.

17caterpillars1mouse · 09/11/2022 18:15
