Where best for decorations

We lost our tree and all our decorations in a fire earlier this year. Long and sad story.

anyway need to start again from fresh. We do have insurance money but would like to avoid spending a complete fortune.

just want to go to a shop pick a lot up and come back again. My first thought was John Lewis but looked at the prices and nearly fell of my chair. Liked ikea stuff in the past but don’t think they have that much of a range.

where should I go? I am on the outskirts of a major city so most retailers available. Want nice good quality stuff not plasticky tat.

ps not looking for an actual tree at the moment as we live near a lovely tree farm so going to try a real tree for the first time this year

B & m you'll get loads in there

Kapalika · 07/11/2022 10:11

Hi
What kind of theme do you normally have, ie where you keen on wooden ornament or more baubles?
Warm yellow Xmas lights?
I love really simple silver small baubles with some wooden figures. Also a few glass ones.
Have you got a Homebase? Ours recently closed but I did buy their multi pack of white bauble with a light blue reindeer design.
Over the years, we've had a tradition where the kids chose one each too. They're teens now and don't give a shit!
I'm totally rambling now! Sorry!

mytortoisemind · 07/11/2022 10:43

The Range are really good for decorations, have a lot of themes and are cheap. Also a big garden centre will have loads of choice too

gluenotsoup · 07/11/2022 10:48

Mark’s and spencer? Sold in boxes and individually. It depends what you like really, it might be best deciding what look you want and going to a couple of places

gluenotsoup · 07/11/2022 10:48

Sorry about the fire, that must have been awful 💐

caringcarer · 07/11/2022 11:00

You could try a garden centre if you want nice glass ones over tat. In the past Homebase used to do them but last couple of years have been disappointing.

DesignerRecliner · 07/11/2022 11:40

For budget friendly, The Range, B&M and Matalan have some beautiful stuff. Basically the same as in the pricier shops but 1/3 of the price. I saw the exact same range of baubles in a local garden centre for £4.99 a go, when they were £1.29 in The Range Angry

mogtheexcellent · 07/11/2022 11:55

I would buy a box or two of cheap baubles and replace a few each year with nicer ones. Its what we did when we got our first tree.

Ihavedogs · 07/11/2022 12:01

I second a local garden centre. The ones in my locality have by far the best decorations.

Primark have some lovely ones - not all plastic tat!

FlowersareEverything · 07/11/2022 12:35

The Range, Marks and Spencer’s, B and M and Dunelm for cheap ones that look decent. TK Max often have nice quality individual ones. Garden centres never fail to have gorgeous ones. Avoid Home Bargains - they look very cheap and tacky.

If I were you I would buy big boxes of filler baubles along with a few nice ones and gradually build up your collection of beautiful individual baubles over the years.

Frazzled2207 · 07/11/2022 14:15

Thanks all for these suggestions

I just nipped out to Dunelm and The Range- never actually been to The Range before and it had a very good selection. Have bought some bits and bobs from both plus lights, occured to me that I need to think further about what I want to achieve before getting anything else but I think I have enough to make a start. Lots of tat there but also some pretty tasteful ones and all £1-3 per piece rather than JL which are £5-6!

@gluenotsoup
thanks. We lost a lot more than the xmas stuff but just been dealing with it as and when. A lot was garden stuff which was fairly straightforward to replace with insurance money. Sadly a lot lost was irreplaceable. It’s quite appealing in many ways “starting again” with xmas decs but when it comes to putting up a tree next month and I realise that I don’t have all the stuff that I have had for years, it will be a sad moment.

ps noted re garden centres, we have some good ones nearby. Think I need to take the kids to help pick the remaining.
