Gift for mum - Smart-ish warm layer for WFH

I'll start by saying I'm not sure this exists🤣

My mum aged 60ish works from home a couple of days a week. She recently mentioned she ends up wearing her dressing gown over her clothes to stay warm, so I thought about getting her an Oodie type thing instead for Christmas. However, she's not really a person for wearing hoodies - is there something else I haven't thought of that is slightly smarter but still locks in the warmth?!

Cashmere cardi/jumper. I have lots -all second hand from charity shops. Look smart but also fine enough to wear as layers. I sometimes have two or three on if it’s very cold. I also like thermal underwear. Uniqlo are good. Also Primark -which is better than my M&S stuff.

Smart knitted shawl/poncho?

one of these?

I got a wool poncho in Sainsbury's to wear for exactly this. Looks a bit more presentable for calls than a hoody I find.

Google "longline cardigan", you're welcome.

I team my longline cardigans (i have two) with a variety of soft cotton scarves - it is surprising how much warmth this adds.

Some pretty vest tops, legging or tights under trousers/jeans and a decent pair of slippers are a must also.

I've long been a fan of the WFH poncho. Chuck it over any outfit and your are video conference ready. It's cosy- it's basically a blanket and keeps your body heat in. It also doesn't need washed as often...I have a few - generally the plain single coloured ones gets worn most .

I have one of these on my Xmas list

I wear one of these. They are down so light but still make a huge difference. www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/outerwear/down-coats-jackets-vests/ultra-light-down-vests

How about some cashmere fingerless gloves/a wrist warmer from Turtle Doves. The are lovely and make such a difference to keeping warm wfh

RedRiverShore2 · 06/11/2022 08:08

I'm a similar age group and would wear a nice thick longline cardigan, making sure it had buttons, some don't. Also a Seasalt handyband around the neck makes a difference as they don't flap about like scarves and can be bought in plain or patterns

MintJulia · 06/11/2022 08:36

What is her style for work?

Thin thermal t-shirts to go under her normal stuff?

MabelMoo23 · 06/11/2022 10:07

2nd recommendation for Cashmere wrist warmers from Turtle Doves. I WFH and use them and they make a huge difference

BeaLola · 06/11/2022 10:23

I bought myself last year the thermal long sleeved tops from M&S to wear under thin jumpers/other long sleeve T-shirts or dresses for when I'm watching my son play rugby or out and about at weekends and they are lovely and toasty

What about one of the M&S funnel necked fleeces , or one of their Jon hooded gilets or the Borg jacket ?

maskersanonymous · 06/11/2022 10:27

Cashmere or merino poncho over M&S Heatgen Plus (thicker fabric). Turtle Doves are good too. Could always put a thin sleeveless down gilet from Uniqlo underneath the poncho too.

@PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister thank you for the Freya Harper link. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

MrsBudd · 06/11/2022 12:24

Thank you so much for all of these amazing suggestions! 🥰

@SlatternIsMyMiddleName I can’t vouch for them as I haven’t got one, but it’s on my Christmas list!

Ihavedogs · 06/11/2022 12:49

I would second a poncho.

In my pre vegan days I was bought a couple of these www.mamacha.co.uk/collections/ponchos

Nowadays I use thermals. M&S often have some of different weights which can either be worn under clothes or used as a top in their own right.

A shawl of some description could also work.
