Can you still buy story “tapes” with read along books?

I used to love listening to a story tape with read along books. I don’t know why, i could read perfectly well, but i loved it.

I think dd(7) would like them too, but the only thing i’ve seen is some Disney CD/book sets. she’s not that keen on disney, and genuinely acts like CDs are similar to gramophones in both age and complicatedness.

is there anything like yoto or tonies that comes with books to read along? And, related question, do either of them do black friday deals?

If you have a cassette player, you can get the old ‘once upon a time’ book as and cassettes on eBay.

I bought loads, just for nostalgia lol

I've seen Yoto and Tonies talked about on here as I feel similarly to you, but when I've looked into them, I find the 'tapes' you need to buy seem really expensive. E.g £25 for 6 Julia Donaldson stories and that's without the books to read along.

At the moment, I use Audible for my children but that does require me to put it on for them as they don't have their own devices.

Honestly, I'm quite tempted to go full old school and pick up a walkman and some old cassette/storybook sets on Ebay.

The Once Upon a Time series is exactly what I had and loved it.

We just bought a Yoto, the official audios are expensive as said above, but lots of people download audiobook mp3 from the library, or read the book themselves (or ask family members to) and transfer it onto a card. They sell cards specifically for this purpose and they can be re-recorded.

We had all of the Storyteller magazines and cassettes. I play them for my DC sometimes and they love them. I still look over my shoulder when I listen to the Goblin Rat!

Well this is what i had come to, but i thought - it’s 2022! The best answer can’t possibly look for a walkman and tapes on ebay, but it looks like it might be!

thanks all - i’ll look into turning audible books into yoto cards and getting the books separately. I want it to be something she can use without asking me for my phone.

i just had a strong memory this evening of listening/reading the Snow Queen and loving the Vivaldi “Winter” music in the background as i admired the pictures. I want that!

We used to have story CDs when mine were younger.

You can also get free audiobooks via the library BorrowBox app for kids, so they could read along to the unabridged ones.

Slightly different but using the library Libby app, you can access loads of magazines, including kids magazines, for free.

I like to switch between reading and listening so use Audible. Many Audible books are cheaper if you have the kindle version.

Amazon have a load of "read along story books with CD", I searched under this.

Sigh... you've made me remember my Puddle Lane collection.

Singleandproud · 05/11/2022 21:54

Try your local library, both physically and the Libby app or whatever your library uses to have access to a larger number of stories.

DD used to read Harry Potter with the audio MP3 and her Roald Dahl collection too with CDs, books and CDs bought separately though not a set.

If you have an Alexa you can sign up to audible and use credits to buy audio books. Childrens books I have found mostly tell them when to turn the page. Then you could get the matching physical book for them? A faff but you could try charity shops.

We have a Yoto player and I've been doing lots of card/book combos. A lot of books come with a CD so if you have a CD drive you can "rip" the CD (takes me back to my youth Grin) then upload the MP3(s) to make a Yoto playlist that you can link to a MYO card. Alternatively, you can borrow physical and audiobooks from the library. It's a bit of faff but well worth it as the children love being able to read/listen independently and leave me alone for a bit which is rare.
