'Really old' stories for 6 year old?

My 6 year old dd really enjoys reading, both us reading to her and independently. She asked us the other night to tell her the story of Guy Fawkes and what happened (they spoke about it in school). We briefly told her and then she asked us to tell her a story about Jesus or God (they're doing a nativity in school), so we ended up telling her the story of Adam and Eve.
She then asked if we could tell her more old stories or buy her some, I asked what she meant and she said "like really, really old stories that are from hundreds of years ago".

So for Christmas I need suggestions of some good older stories for kids this age, maybe age appropriate history or bible stories (we aren't religious but I still think the stories are good).

I was also considering maybe Greek myths or something along those lines. I remember reading Usborne illustrated versions of these as a kid, I also loved reading lots of different types of stories so I want to encourage her if she's showing interest.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I was going to say Greek Myths, although does she mean historical stories, as in true stories? Maybe something like Horrible Histories could work. Usborne also do sets of history books that would be age appropriate.

Bakingdiva · 05/11/2022 11:23

Not hundreds of years ago but maybe some of the classics like Heidi / Secret Garden?

PritiPatelsMaker · 05/11/2022 11:24

DD loved Greek Myth books at that age.

Do you think she'd like daft or fiction based on history like the Magic Treehouse books?

Stompythedinosaur · 05/11/2022 11:25

Usbourne do a book of illustrated viking myths which are good and were enjoyed by my dc.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/11/2022 11:27

We had this - it says it's reading age 9-11 but I'm sure I read it to DD younger than that

She might enjoy the Just So stories (over 100 years ago) or Aesop's fables?

PeekAtYou · 05/11/2022 11:32

My son was fascinated by mythical beasts at that age like centaurs and the Kraken. I don't have the book any more but it had lots of full
colour illustrations which he loved and woile
look through.

Newuser82 · 05/11/2022 11:34

How about a book of folk tales? Or Aesop's fables?

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 05/11/2022 11:36

Was about to say Aesop's fables or Just So but have been beaten to it! Or Horrible Histories?

AlwaysLatte · 05/11/2022 11:39

At that age my son loved Greek myths and we got some lovely age appropriate books. He also liked a boxed set of Shakespeare plays which again were written for younger children in mind. I'll try to find the links.

What about the books by Kate Pankhurst about women in history, she has a series of them, one of the titles is Fantastically Great Women Who Changed The World. I might not have that title word perfect, but you get the idea!
A Google or a look on Amazon will bring the books up.

If you shop at Ocado they often have one of the series on special offer.

I used to love ‚really old‘ stories as a kid.

Yes to myths, not just Greek ones - I loved how all the different cultures have a different story for how the world began. Search something like ‚myths around the world kids book‘, there are loads!

Also fairy tales - get her a child-friendly version of something like the Grimm brothers‘ fairy tales and explain to her that these stories are hundreds, sometimes thousands of years old and used to be passed on by people who couldn’t read or write by telling them around the campfire. Also could talk about how the original stories are so different from the Disney versions we all know.

If she likes history, I used to love a series called My Story - fictional diaries from the perspective of kids in different historical times, like a little girl on the Mayflower or in the War. She also might like the Roman Mysteries series - later ones are a bit old for her but first few are fine.

If she gets really into reading ans can do fairly dense language, I also liked the old kid‘s classics like Robinson Crusoe.

Don't forget too that at 6 "really old" might be perceived differently so she might enjoy books from our more recent past.

Do you think that she'd like trying a History Podcast when you're in the car?

OldReliable · 05/11/2022 11:49

I loved aesops fables at that age. It's not exactly what you're after but has she tried Narnia?

Moro93 · 12/11/2022 10:47

Thank you everyone, lots of great suggestions. I need to check some of them out.

I love the idea of Shakespeare and Narnia etc, I grew up reading things like that. I also loved the Famous Five so that's also a maybe.

Fairy tales and different mythologies other than Greek is also a good shout. We're in Scotland and I seen an illustrated book of Scottish folk and fairy tales that looks really good. Also, the viking ones sound interesting.

I like the idea of just classic books as well, plus the Aesop's fables. I need to narrow it down now!

I also thought of Horrible Histories (used to love the books and TV show) but is she slightly young? I was sound 7-8 when I started reading them I think, but she's at the 'toilet humour' age so would probably enjoy these 😂

Kevin Crossley- Holland has some good Norse and King Arthur books. Might be a bit old for six though!

Dd 7 (recently turned7) loves this book. It has some that I hadn’t heard of along with a few familiar ones. Beautiful illustrations and write ups.
