Laptop or chromebook for ten year old?

Any recommendations please? Planning to get DS a laptop for Christmas but wondering if its worth looking at chrome books? It'll mostly be used for school work, googling pokemon facts, making PowerPoints and games (not gaming as such more like maths games etc)
Any recommendations appreciated!

A chrome book definitely, in year seven a lot of their homework comes to them via app and so it’s easier, my dd doesn’t game on there but always found it excellent for school work and the internet.

I prefer the chrome book to the laptop. I am more likely to want to pitch the laptop out the window than the chrome book. The chrome book battery is far superior- lasts for ages on a single charge and much faster at booting up.

Interesting thank you both. Can you get MS office suite on a chrome book? I'm not a fan of Google workspace!

You can get it, though chrome is made for Google workspace. I've used both and despite initial reservations, I'm Google all the way here now!

Chromebooks are for easy tasks that don't require any "thinking". Its great for reading or social media like facebook. For writing essays or emails or similar basic stuff.

But if you also want it for YouTube videos or watching films or iplayer or amazon ptime then laptop is better. Thats without gaming involved.

Think about what you need it to cover exactly. Would you borrow it at night for Netflix?

We’ve just bought a laptop for DDs birthday this week, she will be 10.

she has had a Chromebook up until now, which she mainly uses for Roblox but says it’s ‘glitchy’ so she’s got a Lenovo laptop which she has asked for but doesn’t know she’s getting.

DS (12) uses the Chromebook for homework which he gets sent via MS Teams and it’s been absolutely fine for that, although one thing I would say is that is was a ball ache to connect to the wireless printer (but maybe that’s a whole other issue…it actually resulted in DH stomping on the printer haha! 😂)

So basically really depends what it’ll be used for!

If we are genuinely expecting power cuts this winter, then a laptop. At least your dc will be able to work or play locally, just ensure they have Minecraft and Office installed on the hard drive and keep the battery charged.

A chrome book won't be much use without internet access.

Good point about Internet access, and maybe a laptop is also more practical for travelling in that case so can download things to watch.
He would probably use Disney + and Netflix a bit as he doesn't have a TV in his room yet.
Think I'm going to have to go into curry's and find a bit more out.

I would recommend a laptop especially if he wants to game on it like Minecraft or Roblox. Both of mine have laptops, super useful for homework, coding and gaming.
