Any good ideas? Would like one for my daughter and son in law and have done the usual foodie ones.

I've bought a charm bracelet one from etsy

Why would any adult want an Advent calendar? They are for very young children.

Remind me what age you are meant to stop having pleasure in your life?

And how it makes any difference to you what others do in the privacy of their own homes?

I'm entertained by the idea that they are for "very" young children. I'm imagining that by the middle of primary school your dc were appreciating Sartre and developing their wine palette? I'm afraid my regular dc still enjoy an advent calendar.

@Duckskitbank may I be cheeky and ask for the Sous Chef referral? I would LOVE a marzipan advent for my mum (and she would love it too!)

Exit game!

Duckskitbank · 11/11/2022 06:22

@HereBeFuckery of course. I will PM you because I’m not sure if it’s allowed on the main boards.

A scented tealight calendar.

I turn 50 in 3 weeks and have one every year.

@Perfectlystill did you have the Bonne Maman? I love their jams but the calendar was a bit meh and some really weird.

I've been dithering about trying to decide whether to treat myself to an advent calendar this year.

@Hbh17 you've done me a favour and helped me decide that I am definitely getting one, thank you.

Now to decide which one .

Perfectlystill · 11/11/2022 19:19

Yes I did and I agree!

Honestly don't think I've had any jam all year as a result!

I second the Exit advent calendars for puzzle solving, they are excellent and they have a few so can be a gift for a few years if they like the first one!

Just bought one of these for adult DD as it is her birthday in a weeks time. We love escape rooms so hopefully this will go down well

What bollocks. I am 60 and treat myself to a new one every year. I bought this year's in July from the Christmas Museum in Salzburg. It is a lovely picture of the city.

Igmum · 11/11/2022 22:02

I splashed out this year and got teenage DD a bath bomb advent calendar. Mini Christmassy bath bomb every day. Looks and smells fabulous. Think I'm more excited about it than she will be

I love a beauty advent calendar. Def not for kids!

pinkksugarmouse · 10/11/2022 21:28

I don’t understand the thrill of them to be honest. All the openings and reviews I have seen show that they are very overpriced.
Each to their own I suppose but they seem like a con.

The M&S beauty one is £40 and contains over £300 of products - amazing bargain!!

I reckon most people don’t use the majority of the stuff in them. People end up with it filling their bathroom cabinets or bedside drawers. 🧴🛀🧼
If you use more than 50% of the stuff in your calendar you will have used more than most people do. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But it isn’t my money and I am not a cosmetics woman. I am very much Superdrug body wash, shampoo & conditioner and some roll on deodorant. So I am clearly not the target market. If it actually got used fine but I despair to think of all the landfill. 😔

elephantseal · 12/11/2022 08:25

@pinkksugarmouse - you're right about the landfill. But then we never have takeaways and don't fly, so we're saving the planet in other ways...

Plus, I always reuse my beauty advent calendars, refill them and give them to other people the next year. I do use most of the products in the calendar. Any I don't, I give to dd or eBay. No waste.

CocoaBeanPlease · 12/11/2022 08:33

Definitely recommend Exit as well, but this year I’m trying out a crossword calendar for a change:

Cassie124 · 12/11/2022 08:40

Echoing the escape room calendar, we've got Thinking Outside the Box this year, but I've heard good things about the Exit one too.

lightisnotwhite · 12/11/2022 11:11

I take the point they are over priced but if you’ve grown up with a calendar it’s a nice present to be given.
I was impressed with Laithwaites last year. Really Christmasy house themed box. The wine was a large glass size and everyday was different. Saved me going and buying a bottle when I just fancied a nice glass of something. Also used some as stocking fillers for others. Comes with a half bottle of fizz hidden in the attic.
If you were buying the bottles on Tescos offer cheapest deal is £45 value ( not including fizz) but none of the unusual wines. So would be hard to judge whoever cost is worth it.
None of it sitting around in cupboard for months though!

I don’t think you are my target concern. It seems as though you have got your head screwed on (as much as possible for any of us living the Western lifestyle). You appear to understand that there’s a balance to be struck.
I think my concern is more with majority of tat that gets looked at once and never again and to me Advent calendars send alarm bells ringing on this score.
I don’t begrudge anyone treats. I am more concerned with those who are buying with little chance they will use even half of it.

Lysianthus · 12/11/2022 13:18

The Holland and Barrett one is reduced for (a far too early imo Black Friday promotion) a couple of weeks from £55 to £35 and it's a real bargain, full of lovely stuff.

OhamIreally · 12/11/2022 13:45

I've never had an adult advent calendar but this year I have treated myself to the Rituals one which comes with a golden tree that the gifts hang on. I'm looking forward to it.
