Suggestions for Barbie or dolls house food for older children?

Barbie don't make stand alone food accessory sets. My daughter has a mix of Lottie dolls, Chelsea and Barbie and various baby versions and a huge Kidkraft house. She currently plays with some Shopkins food characters and makes some of her own food our of paper, and some random Playmobil bits from other sets. I'd love to get her a collection of miniature food, but just can't see anything suitable.

So far I've considered the Real Littles Mini Brand food, but it's more plastic packaging then food and a lot of American junk chain brands we don't even have here, and you don't know what you are going to get. Lundby have a cute dolls house set but it's a bit dull (salt, pepper, herbs not much food at all) and then there are lots of Ali Express style bundles without packaging and reviews usually say people received multiple duplicates, and the range is not good and they aren't very giftable.

There seems a huge gap in the market here. Toy kitchen food is readily available, but not for older children. Does anyone know any Barbie size dolls or figures that might have accessories I can look for? My daughter is 9 but very much into toys still.

The Lori doll range have lots of food accessories, or Sylvanian Families if you look on sites like Jacinabox or Amazon rather than the usual Smyths etc. They seem to be a good size for Barbies. Failing that, what about looking at dollhouse shops, the collectors type? They have realistic looking food but will be pricier than "toy" food.

Etsy have lots of dolls house miniatures, obviously they're a bit pricier but some are amazing quality! I think for Barbie you're looking at 1:6 scale but you might have to double check!
Good luck ☺️

I made some with some random foamy clay I stumbled across in B&M. It was super easy and there were loads of colours. My DD 5 helped me. We made mini sausages, sandwiches, roast potatoes, roast chicken, candy canes, fried eggs.

Try ebay for 2nd hand bundles of barbie size food.
Sometimes the vintage stuff is better. My DD uses my old 1980's sindy food.

Sylvainian families food is nice too.

The M&S version of mini brands is ok too. Again, ebay is your friend. We have the metal shopping trolley too.

You could try totally tiny, they do a few different sets that are actually food items rather than packaging. My daughter uses them with her lol dolls so they might be a little on the small side but worth a try

Thanks for all the suggestions, Lori and Totally Tiny look perfect, though I'm struggling to find stock of Lori, seems like it's being discontinued. Totally Tiny I can only find online sellers offering random choice sets with high postage, so could end up with duplicates but I know what to look for in person now! 🙏

A friend brought one of these back from Japan for me, I've put a ring round the contents, it's a tray, chopsticks, bowl, spoon, fish tempura.

They are really cheap and common in Japan.

If it is suitable PM an address you feel safe to give out and I'll pop it in the post. The box is opened so you might need to re package.

Alternatively if you google, 'Japanese miniature food' you will find some online. In Japan they are sold in 100 yen 'gatcha' machines, that's about £0.60

Maybe I should start an import business.

It looks like aliexpress has quite a lot.

Yes, I used Fimo clay to make things for the doll's House.
A roast chicken is surprisingly easy to make. I made a bowl of fruit and even made a sack of potatoes. Maybe you could get your daughter involved in making the things.

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2022 04:23

My daughter makes hers. She uses all sorts....the foam 'paper' cuts easily and comes in lots of colours.

She uses fimo (airbase clay) - available on amazon or in the Range. She has pizzas, fruit, plates etc

I agree there is a gap for the small food.

FYI....the Japanese mini foods are actually for eating. (Won't say they are real food - as they are powdered things you add water to and bake.....very hit and miss on taste. Although we had a set with a drinks machine and all sorts and my daughter enjoyed the process.)

sashh · 03/11/2022 05:55

@Mumdiva99

The ones I have are plastic, definitely not for eating.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 03/11/2022 06:13

We bought loads of the mini Japanese stuff when we went to Japan. It’s beautifully detailed and was relatively cheap!

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2022 07:58

@sashh apologies.....we had the 'real' food versions.

Although in a bid to find those on amazon a quick search of mini food returns tons of food sets like the op wants.

sashh · 04/11/2022 05:20

No need to appologise, I've seen the tiny real food and thought, I'd like to have a go at and then, as they say in Yorkshire, I bethunk misen and decide it is too fiddly.

Polymer clay. I make 'food' for my niece to use with her Barbies. I remember being younger and rolling play doh into peas 🥺 seems I didn't quite grow out of it! Maybe if your daughter is crafty, let her practice with play doh to make food herself (for fries, a yellow square sliced into rectangles, pizza can be a white triangle with red and yellow topping etc, and then progress to the polymer clay? You can even make dishes/bowls etc... Just thinking... 🤔 You can buy kawaii/ miniature Costa cups etc for epoxy resin, maybe try Etsy... www.etsy.com/uk/listing/843554621/miniature-dollhouse-assorted-snacks-set?click_key=985ac4ae0f501f46b6eda88dccaa61dd4a2832d5%3A843554621&click_sum=5977d53c&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=Barbie+food&ref=sr_gallery-1-3&organic_search_click=1&bes=1&sts=1
