Hi, I am looking for suggestions for books to give as presents for 4 year old and 7 year old children who are both very advanced in reading.
I struggle to find books that are appropriate for their ages ,that don't promote being naughty and that aren't too easy for them.
Thanks for any suggestions.

My 7 year old is currently enjoying Wind in the Willows. He also loves Roald Dahl, with Danny the Champion of the World being a favourite.

The 4 year old might enjoy Isadora moon books but not her mischievous cousin in the Mirabelle series

I've just bought the Very Far North as a read together bedtimr book for DDs 4th birthday after a recommendation. Havent read all of it but its quite lovely.

The Sophie books by Dick King - lovely stories and if you end up reading them to the DC they're pretty funny for the parents 😁

LostInTheColonies · 01/11/2022 18:20

And Katherine Rundell for your older DC. The Explorer is fab.

The Maisie Hitchens series for your 7 year old is great!

My daughter is 7 and loves all things Enid Blyton, Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl. Jacqueline Wilson has things other than the Tracy Beaker type books (although an absent or incapacitated mother is a common theme) there's a few set quite far in the past my daughter's enjoying at the moment.

13 Storey Treehouse for the 7 year old! Brilliant series! Also Roald Dahl and some of the David Walliams books (Christmasuarus is good). I know exactly what you mean about age appropriate. Had parents evening last night and our 7 year old apparently has the reading age of an 11 year old.

Adventures of Algy adventuresofalgy.com/books you can't buy off the website at the moment, but if you contact the author, she will get back to you, and you can even asked for a signed copy. Lovely stories about friendship and helping one another out.

Roal Dahl books are a nightmare for a very literal autistic (but great at reading child).

WimbyAce · 02/11/2022 13:59

Have been doing Roald Dahl with the 7 year old and also an Enid Blyton book. Thinking of starting her on famous five.

BlueChampagne · 02/11/2022 15:45

Worst Witch
101 Dalmatians
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Black Beauty
Heidi
Swallows and Amazons

Grumpycatsmum · 02/11/2022 15:52

Father Christmas Needs A Wee. Picture book but fab.

Also Jesus' Christmas Party.

Both by Nicholas Allan.

For the 7 year old Katie Morag, Gobolino, Alice in Wonderland (maybe abridged), any Famous Five

Grumpycatsmum · 02/11/2022 15:55

Also Cops and Robbers (definitely not encouraging naughty behaviour, cops all end up in jail), Tabby McTat, The Smartest Giant in town

Any Asterix or TinTin

Grumpycatsmum · 02/11/2022 15:56

Nope. Meant Robbers all end up in jail!!

BergamotMouse · 02/11/2022 20:36

How about the teacup house twitches books. About toy rabbits that come to life. Chapter book but nice pictures throughout.

GabrielAgreste · 02/11/2022 20:38

Claude for the little one and Mr Penguin for the big one - both by Alex T. Smith

CrabbyCat · 02/11/2022 20:38

How about Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf or Mrs Pepperpot?

Jeremy James? He does 'naughty' things like pulling the bottom tin from a pile at the supermarket, or teasing a bull, but he gets his comeuppance with all the tins crashing down or the bull chasing him!

Milly-Molly-Mandy? She's sickeningly good at all times.

'My Naughty Little Sister' is good for their age - written from the perspective of the older sibling so it's tut-tutting and head-shaking at the naughtiness rather than condoning.

Paddington? Again things often go tits up because of him but more accidentally than through naughtiness.

The Worst Witch? Ditto.

Winnie-the-Pooh?

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf

My DCs all loved the BeastQuest books

GreenLeavesRustling · 02/11/2022 21:01

Mine loved Enid Blyton at that age, especially the fantasy ones like Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair.
