Proper interesting, detailed wind up toys as stocking fillers...help!

TwinsAndTiramisu · 24/10/2022 22:47

Can anyone please help?

We have 3DC, and a tradition is to have a really interesting wind up toy in their stocking each year. Then after Christmas, we put them in the Christmas Eve box, ready for next year to get the load of them out on Christmas Eve, and have a laugh setting them all off, and now for DS (14) a bit of nostalgia ("Remember that one! That's from when I was about 3!) It's a really sweet part of our Christmas.

These aren't the boring normal ones, like the chattering teeth, or those racing santa/reindeer/snowman things, which just jitter or shuffle about. We've got monkeys riding bikes whilst clicking cymbals, dancing dinosaurs shaking tails and gnashing teeth in santa hats, shiny somersaulting penguins which flap one wing, then the other, then off they go!

I used to get them from a nearby independent toyshop...which closed during COVID. I struggled last year and got these tin affairs (frog, chicken, mouse etc) from Amazon, which weren't particularly special and broke within a couple of days. The ones on Amazon now, are all the bog standard ones, or more of the tin.

I've found what I used to get, but sods law they're in the US and can't find anything here.

These are the things I'm after, just that bit more special, they used to be about a tenner each from the toyshop:

are the ones I'm looking for www.tintoyarcade.com/z-wind-ups-collection

Anyone know of anything similar?

Thank you xx

well I enjoyed looking at these

  • swimming crocodiles,
  • a horror trio where the witch and the vampire walk faster than the skeleton
— a pirate shop that bobs up and down

Yes, but these are either: wooden and massive, the same as the tin ones I got off amazon that were rubbish (hello squirrel, duck chicken thing and frog) or £35 each, and I need three (little martian holding a poloaroid camera spinning around on that planet, I need you!!)

These are more in the right direction, Croc is a potential, purely as DD likes crocs, but they're still quite basic ones (I'm not being awkward, honest guv)

Would a wind-up music box fit the brief? There are lots of pretty ones with all sorts of recognisable songs or move theme tunes, you could pick something personal for each child. Your tradition sounds lovely by the way.

Thank you, DC love it :)

A music box is a lovely idea, but too big for what we do. DS has accumulated 14 of these now, and DTwins will be on their third each this year. It's lovely when they all come tumbling out of the Christmas Eve box and all get set off at once whirling and somersaulting across the floor. Everyone grabs for the monkey (he's the best)

Are these the right ones? On eBay

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 24/10/2022 23:36

Buying 50 might be a bit excessive I suppose...

Thesearmsofmine · 24/10/2022 23:39

I have no help to offer but just want to say that this sounds like such a lovely tradition 🥰

YuliaJollyberry · 25/10/2022 01:07

Lovely tradition. I looked on the Etsy link above and found a seller called Brimtoys in Whistable. A web search revealed them to be a wholesaler and directed me to

Plus a list of stockists

These are gorgeous! I wonder what the shop prices are....

Thank you (repeat to self, I will not spend £35.99 on a rapping duck)

I dunno, if you buy 50 now and they're all different you've got a few more years before you need to worry about tracking any down again!
Lovely tradition to have.

I emailed the guy...it's box of 50, but only 3 or 4 types per box, so I'd only get 3 different ones, maybe one spare one, and then 46 to rehome Grin

They are the 10 that I got in my box from the ebay seller who was listed previously

Enterprising reseller maybe?

ManefesationofConciousness · 07/11/2022 22:13

Plus the are now reduced to £19.95 for 50- so bargains

TwinsAndTiramisu · 07/11/2022 23:07

Either way, I'm chuffed to bits! Getting an elephant for the eldest, and can't decide between the duck and the UFO for little DS, and then the butterfly or the snail for DD. Might just get them all, then I'm covered for a while Grin

TwinsAndTiramisu · 14/11/2022 21:03

Update!

Elephant has arrived and is fab! Duck is brilliant too. UFO I'm not sure little DS will be impressed that it self rights, so that will be for another year. Butterfly is nice, if somewhat irratic, and snail is lightning bolt fast which DD will love Grin
