Need to get some awful matching Christmas jumpers. Looked at Etsy not sure if the quality. Anyone have any ideas?

I’d buy second hand and buy matching appliqué or decorate them the same. I bought a lovely bright red cashmere jumper at a charity shop for £25 that I might decorate for Christmas. It’s too nice though really so may just make a tinsel necklace.

PortiasBiscuit · 23/10/2022 14:36

Some poor sod feeds his or her family by making these jumpers.
Things are never simple!

Don't know if it would work for your charity, but when I was on the PTA we used to ask for Xmas jumper donations in January to sell the following Nov for Xmas jumper day.

Was actually very popular as parents were happy with the cost at a £1 and liked the sustainability and being able to boost the charities profits.

Point taken Twig, so can you then suggest an ethically sourced, fair trade ugly jumper that doesn't shed plastic each time it's worn?

Thank you for listening @WildFlowerBees and being so gracious. Whilst I stand by what I said, I'm recovering from recent breast cancer surgery so I'm sorry if I was rather grumpy.

I've found these which are not ideal as they still have plastic in them but they are recycled. Not sure they are ugly enough though!

I work for a neonatal charity and we have to turn knitting away from kind old ladies. I bet you could find a group of little old ladies who'd happily knit you some wonderfully ugly jumpers in some nice natural fibres.

sandgrown · 23/10/2022 17:24

If you are anywhere near Blackpool the local tat markets usually have some pretty awful specimens. Do they have to match ? If not try the charity shops.

WildFlowerBees · 23/10/2022 17:24

Out of interest @TwigTheWonderKid what am I looking for what are we all looking for to ensure there's no plastic in fibres?

I hope your surgery went well (as well as these things can) Flowers

To be honest, it's a minefield. Ideally you'd avoid everything that is synthetic. Some products are labelled "eco friendly" because they've been made out of recycled plastic bottles and whilst recycling may be considered "good" it's not if it's leaching harmful plastics into our water, then our food and ultimately our bodies (they've just found microplastic in breastmilk for the first time). So avoiding anything plastic-based like acrylic, nylon, polyester etc would help avoid the plastic contamination. However, many people would argue that cotton, linen and even wool production has unacceptable environmental impacts (eg takes a massive amount of water to grow cotton) and even things like Tencel and Viscose which are made from wood pulp use some fairly nasty chemicals in their production, which really take us back to only buying what we need and looking after it and wearing it for as long as possible.

BiscuitLover3678 · 23/10/2022 19:39

People are pathetic. You can buy a jumper at Christmas to wear at Christmas and then where them whenever you’re cold for the rest of your life.

BiscuitLover3678 · 23/10/2022 19:39

*wear

WildFlowerBees · 23/10/2022 20:13

You can @BiscuitLover3678 but Twig has a point in that each time these clothes are washed they shed plastic into our water supply. For our aquatic life this isn't good so I'm happy to do differently now I know differently.

I think 2nd hand knitted or asking someone to knit is probably going to be the best bet?

Lots of second hard knitted and bloody awful jumpers at Beyond Retro. The vests are my favourite www.beyondretro.com/products/embroidered-christmas-vest-m-2

WildFlowerBees · 23/10/2022 20:32

Thank you @Aeio a pp also recommended. I've sent them the link let's hope there's something dire and perfect for them there!
