DS turns 1 in December and we're struggling what to get for both Christmas and birthday. He loves climbing anywhere and everywhere he can get, but not really interested in books or soft toys. I don't want to buy a load of plastic crap that will sit in the corner. I'm thinking a ball pit, some sort of ride on car and a mini trampoline but can't think of anything else. Any suggestions?

Sand pit
Paddling pool
Bath toys e.g. foam shapes, squirting animals, watering can, water wheel and cups
Moredig room projector
Wooden trolley - this lasted years in my house. First as a walker, then as a pram for soft toys, then as a pretend lawn mower and finally as a pretend shopping trolley! It was similar to this

Oh and a large cardboard box he can climb into.

Since the age of 1 my DD has looked at our packaging, and demanded we keep the largest box for her to play with.

I'm wondering if your in the due in December 2021 WhatsApp group??

For his birthday in early December mine is getting (already has it because it's developmentally appropriate now) a mini soft play set, it's good for the gross motor skills and is getting plenty of use.

For Christmas he's getting a click clack track, fisher price car transporter, Galt pop up thingy, and some sensory books. And a skuttlebug from his grandma.

Books

A tin teaset (floss and rock do some lovely ones) - my two got lovely play with tea sets from around 14 months and it's not a gift others are likely to buy

A set of different texture balls

A set of rubber or wooden blocks if you don't already have some. I remember tower building being a schema around 1

A peg in hole puzzle

Soft body but hard head dolls seem to be popular at the toddler group I volunteer at for that age with both boys and girls and again something family and friends are unlikely to buy (as you have a son) so you won't get duplicates

The tin teasets might be sass and belle actually

My DD is 1 in Feb and is getting: lift out puzzles, a hammer bench, clothes, a shape sorter, a little push along train, some skittles, animal magnets, play food and books.
Possibles on her list are: wooden rainbow and/or peg dolls, new bowl and plate, sleeping bags, duplo numbers train, bead maze, swim bag/rucksack/lunch box, baby Einstein drums, bath toys, some items for messy play/arts and crafts, some story/music CDs, a little table and chair and a rag doll,

1 year olds don’t need gifts. Honestly.

user267451 · 23/10/2022 20:35

Just get him one thing. Lots of presents they find overwhelming.

Chaiandchocolate · 23/10/2022 21:20

Leapfrog Scout (my DS loved this)
Duplo
Books (the touch/sensory type)
Ride-on vehicle
Ball
Shape sorter
Sand pit (DS still has his aged 7)- just make sure it’s watertight
Stacking cups/rings

DS turned one around Christmas last year & we mainly got him things to grow into or for the summer.

Toot Toot cars (second hand)
Brio train set (second hand)
Little Tikes car & slide
Scuttlebug bike

were all favourites from us/wider family.

Mine will be 16 months old 2 days after Christmas and I've got him a folding gymnastics bar with rings (amzn.eu/d/9dgna0v) because he loves the bar and rings at his gymnastics classes and it should last him until he's at least 6 :P
I've also got him a VTech Grow & Go Ride On (which is £60 in Argos but I found for £20 on Facebook Market Place)
I'll be getting him a toy kitchen as well when I finally manage to choose one from the hundreds of options there seem to be!!
He's also getting some little bits like toy cars, books, puzzles, crayons, a light up ball, a sleepsuit, a little stacking toy and some baby snacks but most of that will be split between his Christmas eve box and stocking.

His favourite birthday gifts were his laugh and learn chair (mostly for climbing on), a doll, an activity cube his Nana got him and all the balloons :D

We’ve bought several of these for various babies and they’ve all been obsessed with it. Highly recommended.
