What to buy DS's girlfriend ?

I have a 24yr old DS, who has just moved in with his girlfriend of over a year.

She seems lovely, but I hardly know her as she used to live 150 miles away.

Our conversations have all been 'small talk', and that's not likely to change for a while, as they're spending their 'free' time on their new flat.

So, I have no idea what she likes/dislikes etc, no clue about what kind of perfume/candles/clothing she likes, so can't even choose a nice scarf & gloves with a nice candle etc ?

As an aside, my DS is very vocal if he thinks I've got a gift 'wrong' (for him) and tells me sternly not to 'guess' and always ask people for what they want, because otherwise it's just a 'waste of money' ! ( He's high functioning ASD, so doesn't really understand the whole 'it's the thought that counts' idea ? And he says any kind of voucher simply 'ties' you to where you can spend it, so cash is better.)

Any ideas guys ? I really don't want to give cash as a first Xmas gift to my potential DIL ?

If they've just got a new flat - a voucher for homesense would be fab, it can be used on home bits or in tkmaxx - great place to find bargains and cute home things.

That or a nice restaurant voucher for them to have a date night?

You sound lovely to be putting so much thought into it! 😊

What do you know about her?

Mrsjayy · 23/10/2022 16:12

My dd is 24 and loves hats, gloves and scarves so don't rule it out I usually get them from fat face at Christmas, also pyjamas is another nice gift, ask your son though he will have a definite idea,

Bridetobe9 · 23/10/2022 16:17

Do you really know nothing about her? Can you ask your son? If not a gift voucher is a good way to go, I would appreciate that more than a ‘hamper’.

I’d ask if they’d like a gift for their flat. No idea on your budget so hard to say what, joint gift such as a velvetiser, something that’s not too practical and makes a decent gift if they like hot chocolate

I’ve got a 27 year old ds, I’m buying him and his gf a joint gift of a restaurant voucher. I know where they like to eat, and obviously money has got tighter recently so they can’t go out so much now.

Ask her to make a little amazon list so you can choose something off there. I would not buy generic gifts like prosecco or hat and gloves set. I think most people would rather be asked or would prefer a voucher for a shop where they can choose themselves. M and S is always a good bet as she could buy new nightwear or underwear from there.

Fluffy socks from Fat face, a Tony's chocoloney bar, book voucher?

My DD same age loves coffee, Gin and foodie things.

Also, we do often buy DD24 and her fiancé joint presents. We bought them a Nespresso machine (and then little gifts each). They've usually got brilliant deals from Black Friday onwards.

The one thing I didn't have when I bought my first house was a vase. I received some flowers and had to stick them in a plastic jug as I had to watch every penny and couldn't justify buying one. My Mum took the hint and bought me one. It's also one of those things you can have more than one of.

If they have just moved into a flat, I would buy something house related - kitchen gadget (Joseph Joseph?), vase, picture frames, house plant, garden tool set etc
