Present ideas for a 10 year old that doesn't like computer games?

We have got his some technics lego, and a basketball and hoop, but he wants something to play with on the day..... This is all split between grandparents and us, but don't want to spend more than £40 or £50. Younger ds has play sets and trackmaster Thomas etc so I think he probably wishes he was younger and had an actual tactile toy to play with, rather than an outside toy or something to make??!! Any ideas lovely people please?

Our son turns 10 at Christmas and it's so tricky. I have got him a Yellie and a Fart ninja for his stocking, as I thought these would still amuse him. A big hit last year, and something he still enjoys, was a laser Nerf fun. Maybe get him a pair and one of the adults can battle with him?

DS has mentioned Spy X stuff, so we are considering a small set of this stuff.

Rubiks cube or similar puzzle?
Screwball Scramble
a bob-it
a ukulele

Needmorelego · 20/10/2022 08:55

Smaller Lego sets that he can build on the day seems an obvious one.

Biscuitsneeded · 20/10/2022 08:59

A traditional boardgame like Cluedo that you all play together

There are some fantastic mind games type puzzles out there, that have bright tactile pieces and can often be played solo or with another player, my kids love them. And quite a few come in travel cases so are great for trips/holidays. Ones we have that I can recall are Smart Games IQ puzzler and The Genius Star - but there are loads out there by the same company.

My DS got a g-shock watch for his 10th birthday that he still loves.

Hot Wheels was also still big thing at that age, he has a fantastic dino themed track that has various dino skeletons that interact with the cars, it still comes out sometimes when he has run out of screen time.

My ds's used to love lego at that age.
I know you have bought technics but normal lego is different.

My dd is 10, she really enjoys board games. Some solo ones we have are Simon Air, bop it, silly sausage, rush hour, screwball scramble. Ive got her cat crimes for Christmas morning.

Or if you wanted family games she really likes the big potato ones, we have chameleon, OK play, colour brain junior, what came first. Or we like cluedo, monopoly (got her dinopoloy for Xmas!), payday, exploding kittens, uno, dobble, pictureka, game of life.

I buy all our board games in the charity shop or from vinted. Usually games are in very good condition. I always check contents to make sure its all complete.

Or otherwise would he enjoy some fossils or crystals? My daughter wants some geodes you crack open yourself. She has quite a collection of fossils and crystals.

Origami set? My eldest daughter enjoyed these. She also had a great book of paper planes. Had loads of printed paper and instructions to make different planes. Think it was usbourne.

Is he into pokemon? Maybe some cards.

Or does he like any films/TV series. You can get funko pop mystery minis or mystery figures for quite a few. My eldest likes opening them and displaying in her room. I've bought lots from toysforapound.com in the past.

Things my 10 year old plays with that are not screen based are
electronic dart board - decathlon
(soft archery - decathlon)
geomag
gravitrax
1000 jigsaw puzzles
(skateboard)
board games, more complicated ones like 7 wonders, andor
Domino runs (where you set them up and knock one to make them all fall over)
lego
She also likes diamond painting, drawing and sequin art.

Some more complicated craft kits, or 3D wooden models or a science kit?

ABlindAssassin · 14/11/2022 19:47

Gravitrax
3D snakes and ladders
Snap curcuits
Giant slinky
Bouncy ball making kit

Emanresu9 · 14/11/2022 19:48

All the boys in my son’s y6 class are obsessed with Akedo at the moment.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/11/2022 23:27

Gravitrax!

We don’t do computer games so have had to rack our brains re plenty of ‘real life’ stuff for him to fiddle with, over the years

  • PP have already mentioned Smart Games. Traffic and Atlantis Escape are tactile and fun.
  • Rubix cube, go for the non branded smooth running options, not the actual Rubix cube brand. There are easy instructions online that we print out in colour.
  • Yoyos, the good brands so it is heavy and works
  • PP have mentioned gravitrax
  • CD player and CDs.
  • Pokémon card set
  • very bouncy balls like Moonballs
