She's 67 but young at heart. Her interests are choir, crafting and walking/geocaching..

Craft wise she has every possible piece of equipment or material she could need. Seriously she has an entire wall of wool alone 😆

Walking she has multiple pairs of boots and every accessory you can imagine. She has membership to national trust and english heritage. She has some kind of doo-dad that she uses for geocaching already.

Choir she travels 2 hours a week to attend, it's a modern choir not like church traditional.

She's very outdoorsy and loves being outside. Previous years I have bought her heated items, base layers, posh gloves/hats etc.

She lives quite frugally, doesnt want electrics on the go much anyway as she watches the pennies a lot.

Has 8 grandkids and has previously had calendars, blankets, coasters etc with the kids on.

We lost my sister this year, and I know Mum misses her. So I did think about something relating to my sister, but also I dont want her xmas present to be about the loss of my sister and not about what Mum likes.

She doesnt really drink alcohol, eat chocolates etc. She eats very basic, think egg and chips, boiled eggs, egg, eggs and more eggs😆.

We already sponsored a donkey for her this year.

I have gotten her a posh notebook and a puzzle but want something else. Budget is no more than £25.

I have bought vouchers from charities who support women in the third world.

What about a nice scarf, perfume, broach. I know you said she has a lot of crafts but what about a craft kit( weaving, candle making kit, crochet kit.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 17/10/2022 11:43

Does she wear jewellery? What about a bracelet or necklace with a hanging charm of the first initial of each of her children (including your sister). Then it's not so much about the loss of your sister but about your sister still being included in the family even though she's not there.

She really doesnt need more crafts, at the rate she has collected them I'll be inheriting them all 😆😆

I did consider this, but here is the awkward bit.

Mum has 4 children, my sister (deceased), me, younger sister and younger brother.

But my brother has voluntarily cut himself out of family life. He hates us, and even on the morning of my sisters funeral was texting us horrible messages. Mum has only in the last few months resigned herself to this, and removing him from her will etc.

So, do I do a necklace with all 4 kids or just the 3 decent kids??

chickens?

Fraaahnces · 17/10/2022 12:33

Do you have any of your DS’s clothes? You could potentially get a patchwork throw made for her

BlueChampagne · 17/10/2022 12:38

Magazine subscription? I get my Dad a sub for Private Eye every Christmas.

Sweetchildofmine19 · 17/10/2022 12:56

Candle? You could maybe even get one with an engraved message on the bottom for your sister if you wanted to do that.

I know you say she doesn’t like chocolate or fancy foods but what about a few savoury treats that she likes in a mini hamper - anything she likes? Maybe crisps, nuts, jelly sweeties, cheese, crackers?

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 17/10/2022 13:39

Thanks everyone, I have ordered her a 6 issues magazine subscription to Discover Britain.

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel Oh gosh your poor mum! In that case I'd scrap the idea of initials on a necklace altogether.
I've found as my parents have got older, what they really want and enjoy most is to spend time with me and my siblings. So I always try to arrange "experience" gifts that I can do with them. A meal or afternoon tea for you and your mum, a weekend away if your budget stretches to it.

I'm a little younger than your mum and would like perfume, especially by the fireside which smells like it sounds and flowerbomb, books or a kindle, posh bath stuff

Great idea! My mum is no longer with us, but every Christmas I used to get her a magazine subscription, she loved it.

When my brother died, my SIL ordered memory bears for all their grandchildren made from his shirts (he had a lot of nice check shirts) - if you have any of your sister’s clothing you could get your mum one of those next time?

www.memorybears.co.uk

Also, again for next time, there is another organisation similar to NT & EH - www.historichouses.org/houses/ - it includes loads of amazing places you normally have to pay for, like Alnwick Castle.

myrtleberry · 17/10/2022 14:50

If you're near London I'd suggest taking her to the Kaffe Fassett exhibition.

For your budget maybe something like nice Christmas PJ's. or a posh hot water bottle. My mum loves a nice face cream at christmas or some silk socks.

Pootles34 · 17/10/2022 15:06

Voucher to attend a workshop for one of the crafts she likes? 1-1 vocal tuition for her singing, if she would like that?

I also thought chickens, but that would be a pretty big commitment on her part!
