Is my DH the hardest person to buy for?

There are several reasons he’s difficult normally: he places a lot of importance on presents and the thought behind them; he tends to buy himself things he wants so I have to find something he doesn’t yet know he wants.
This year is harder than normal because he can’t access many of his normal interests (camping, walking, fishing) or even leave the house much because of health issues. He has gained weight as a consequence and doesn’t want clothes in this size/ wouldn’t appreciate food treats because of this/ has cut out alcohol. Obviously, experiences are also out…
Oh, and he doesn’t read much!
Has anyone got someone harder to buy for? Or any genius suggestions?

A craft! Men do crafts too ;-)
is it outdoors he can’t do our going out for longer periods? Classes in all sorts of things can be had . I bough DH a knife making workshop which was brilliant. Also wood turning, pottery etc.

and (gasp) don’t rule out other crafts like knitting and embroidery. (Don’t forget that fishermen used to embroider - some of their work is worth £££ in the ‘outsider art’ scene if you need a man justification)

A tablet
Scarf
Socks
Dressing gown
Nice slippers- Uggs do nice ones for men
Toiletries
A meal out
Does he cook? Recipe book or cooking gadget
Coffee machine

He may not like some of these but Just a few ideas or inspiration!

I'd second the craft suggestion. Maybe whittling with a nice pocket knife, safety gloves, some good quality wood, a book etc.

I bought my husband a book of knots with a piece of rope and it kept him busy for ages. Random but ended up being quite a mindful activity!

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/10/2022 20:45

Unfortunately, he can’t actually do sitting up for long periods, so it’s even harder. Cooking and even seated experiences are out 🙈
He has (and loves) a coffee machine. Toiletries and a dressing gown are possible….

Maybe a weather station? Thinking about getting one for my outdoorsy DH, but not sure if it's a dud of an idea or not

bigblueyonder · 16/10/2022 21:08

has cut out alcohol.

Try a bottle of Pentire or Feragaia, non alcoholic drinks you can mix with tonic.

1stTimeMama · 16/10/2022 22:03

My husband is equally as hard. He buys everything he wants, he's teetotal, eats uber healthily so no treat goods, doesn't use fancy toiletries, has no hobbies other than the gym, nor time to do them. Has a Kindle and buys whatever books he wants to read. He works abroad, and lives in a hotel, so he can't take much out there with him, and he's limited on what he can do in his room.
Who the heck knows, is my current line of thinking!

jammydodgersforever · 16/10/2022 22:10

What about some art? A watercolour fishing themed? Or maybe something sentimental - like framed photos.
or a subscription to a magazine or Spotify.

buckeejit · 16/10/2022 22:35

Could he play the ukelele? I've been learning recently & it's fun. Would he listen to books on audible or similar? I go through a lot of audiobooks & great for most people.
My husband has liked - a Peugeot pepper mill, bamboo socks, mini leather man, inscribed Swiss Army knife, hotel chocolate velvetiser, little bright torch, cleaning wipes for his glasses, beer subscription, Apple TV or other network subscription, electric massager

Lcb123 · 16/10/2022 22:37

I usually always get experience gifts as try to have minimal stuff. Or some posh non alcoholic drinks?

mam0918 · 17/10/2022 15:57

My DH loves a tv show 'Gone Fishing', as well as the show they have books and do audiobooks (my DH loves audiobooks for some reason) so maybe he would live something like that.

CottonPyjamas · 17/10/2022 16:06

My DH makes things with paracord. That could be linked with some of your DH's usual hobbies. There are books and the odd tool that can be bought for it, as well as the paracord itself

neonleopard · 17/10/2022 19:08

Coffee subscription?

Howmanysleepsnow · 17/10/2022 20:37

Coffee subscription went down well in the past, and he’s done paracord stuff (military background) so those could be worth revisiting. He has a leatherman or that would’ve been spot on too.
These suggestions are definitely giving food for thought so far…

I’m getting dh a fancy shmancy toothbrush! A couple of cd’s for the car and some new trainers

TheHappiestChristmasTree · 17/10/2022 20:39

Pjs, socks, boxers.. can never have enough!!

I buy my DH Lego, books, vinyl. Oh and a nose hair trimmer this year Grin

TheHappiestChristmasTree · 17/10/2022 20:43

Another idea- coffee and book subscription!

I got this one gifted to me last year:

Divebar2021 · 17/10/2022 20:48

Hmmmm my step dad was a train buff and was restoring an old steam train with a group of volunteers and I found an old engine drivers handbook for a particular steam train in an vintage shop. Would there be something comparable that he would be interested in to do with his hobbies? Old copies of Wainwrights guides or old maps of walks / areas that he knows. Old fishing rods / reels etc…. Essentially items that are more unique than standard high street fare. Other than that kit type shizz.

RomeoOscarXrayIndigoEcho · 17/10/2022 20:58

Etsy is my favourite place to go to for unique gift ideas.

Is he lying down a lot? Would he like something to project onto the ceiling?

What about a telescope for looking at the sky?

Magazine subscription

Flowers. Men like flowers too, but hardly ever get sent them!

BigFatLiar · 17/10/2022 21:00

We get each other an annual for the comics we read when we were children.
We don't really need anything so it's silly little things that make each other smile.

hattie43 · 18/10/2022 07:47

What about a bird feeding station . If he has limited mobility he can watch out the window for hours and maybe a book of British birds to start recognising them . All whilst sitting in his new dressing gown lol

My husband doesn't wear underwear or pj's. He's so awkward!

I bought DH a whittling set with a book, knives and some blocks of wood. He was totally nonplussed by it and never used it.

However, he did love the lock picking set with perspex practice locks.

I like the knot idea. Might use that

ChocChipOwl · 19/10/2022 14:06

Get him a bramwell brown clock. They are perfection!
