Where does it snow in December?

I've bought some Christmas cards, same sort of pictures that I always choose, of snowy scenes with Christmas trees and reindeer pulling sleigh through the sky over snow covered roofs, etc. This is the image I associate with Christmas in my mind. Unfortunately, I live in fairly central London! It never snows in December, even if it snows in January or February it's never "proper" snow.
Where can I go in December for a pre-Christmas holiday, where there will be snow on the ground, maybe a pretty village, shop windows lit up, Christmas tree in the centre of town. Snow and pretty lights are important.

If you're really planning a trip, try Utica, in NY state.

Watapalava · 17/10/2022 18:47

It’s only Rovaniemi which is risky for snow

its guaranteed in most Lappish resorts

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 17/10/2022 19:23

@Watapalava oh that's interesting - it was Rovaniemi where my friends took their kids for the disappointing snow-less Santa trip! Perhaps they have a special microclimate in Rovaniemi.

I am just looking at other Arctic circle places, so many pretty towns!

I went saariselka

its stunning

Watapalava · 17/10/2022 20:43

Rovaniemi is really low - it’s not actually in the arctic circle you have to go on a buss I think to cross it

all other resorts get snow from november

stargirl1701 · 17/10/2022 20:47

Alaska.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 17/10/2022 20:57

Luosto way up inside the Arctic Circle is utterly magical and seriously snowy.
There was a little bit of snow at the airport in Rovaniemi but it’s too far south and I don’t think it is inside the AC?
Take a look at the log cabins with Canterbury Travel.

I am mid Sweden JÃ¥mtland and it always snows at Christmas - average temp -14 but it has been a lot closer. Gets dark around 4pm. Not too many lights, but everyone has the candle arches in their window and it does look very pretty.

Romania.

We have an office there and from what my colleagues say from November to feb/March it is pure snow.... across quite a lot of the country at least.

@mathanxiety I was going to suggest western New York. Ithaca, Syracuse, etc. Great minds think alike 😂

GrouchyKiwi · 22/10/2022 11:11

You can never guarantee snow.

We were in Iceland for New Year a few years ago and there was no bloody snow at all. Plenty of frost. A couple of hours after we left they had record snowfall, and the best Northern Lights display my friends had seen in ages. I was so Angry

I am from Germany and haven't seen snow in December for years now. My Swiss friend had said that snow at Christmas is getting less and less.

If you. look at the usual Hallmark movie scenes you may need to look at northern USA/Canada.

Awumminnscotland · 22/10/2022 22:37

I second Avimore. Its in the cairngorms, a mountain range and ski resort. Plenty of beautiful scenery roundabout and lots of teeny villages all around the Highlands with high probability of snow.
It's definitely not England.

bigfamilygrowingupfast · 22/10/2022 22:49

Val D'Isere in France gets snow very early as it's so high up (near Mont Blanc). Possibly avoriaz too - you'll have to check though but it's a magical place to visit

lannistunut · 23/10/2022 06:58

Something weird about flying round the globe trying to experience the type of winter we had before climate change really took hold.

CrabbyCat · 23/10/2022 07:16

I wouldn't bet on Aviemore anymore, not in December, you now get warm spells that melt all the snow that has fallen so far at that time of year. January or February would be safer bets.

Similarly, Bavaria would have been a good bet years ago but now Christmas is more likely to be grey and wet.

The irony of flying to find snow because climate change means we don't have any.
