Turkey cooking will this work?

Sundaychiller · 15/10/2022 08:25

We intended to go out for lunch but can't find anywhere with a good menu so looks like I will be cooking!
I want to visit my DS and his family Christmas morning, however my new oven doesn't have a timer to turn on. If I put the turkey on when we leave and set it to turn off at 12.15pm will the turkey be ok sat in the oven til 2pm or will it ruin? It will be a crown.
Thanks for any help!

I imagine it would be rather dry.

AlwaysLatte · 15/10/2022 08:27

You'd have up work out the timings to include the amount of cooking that would continue as it cooled but as you should let the turkey rest for a good hour at least anyway it could work out perfectly.

SheWoreYellow · 15/10/2022 08:28

The oven will stay hot and it will cook for longer.
What are your timings? There might be another way.

SheWoreYellow · 15/10/2022 08:30

I’d just eat a little later and visit a little earlier and then put it on as soon as you get home. You’ll have other bits to get cooked too.

tealandteal · 15/10/2022 08:30

Will you be cooking the other bits such as potatoes etc when you get home? I buy a boned and rolled turkey which fits in my oven along with everything else and only takes an hour to cook. I’m not sure if you want it ready to eat when you get home or if you’d have time to cook when you get back.

Sundaychiller · 15/10/2022 08:33

My timings are leave the house at 9.15am, visit son until 12.15pm pop into a pub on the way back for a Christmas drink with friends (DH driving not drinking) leave at 1.45pm back home for 2pm, dinner at 2.45pm, leave for Heathrow at 4.30pm!!
Busy day ahead.😁

@tealandteal that sound ideal, where do you get these from please?

Crikey, busy day indeed. I’d cook the turkey the day before.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/10/2022 08:40

Have something other than turkey! Or cook it the day before and slice it cold. You could always warm the slices though in gravy if you wanted to.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/10/2022 08:48

Cook it the say before!

Sundaychiller · 15/10/2022 09:01

Sorted, I will order a rolled turkey joint, thanks all!

Another vote for cook the night before, until it is just safely cooked. Slice and heat up in gravy on Christmas Day to keep it moist.

Added bonus if the crown is large enough, you could have hot turkey rolls on Christmas Eve so no left overs next day if you're going away.

tealandteal · 15/10/2022 10:21

@Sundaychiller I buy mine from Pipers Farm and they deliver it, I’m not sure how far they deliver but I think everywhere? I’ve ordered it for delivery in December so I know that’s sorted. You choose how many people you need to feed, the white and brown meat is rolled up into separate little rolls and stuffed. It also includes enough pigs in blankets for 2 per person and some lovely stock for making gravy.

blusteryshowersaway · 15/10/2022 10:32

Cook the Turkey the day before and carve.

Sundaychiller · 15/10/2022 12:02

I have ordered a 1kg turkey breast roll so thanks for all your help again
