Board games for 8yo & parents

That can be joined in (ish) by a 4yo?

Both dds are loving playing cluedo with us. Not quite four-year-old joins in to a degree - she rolls the dice on her turn, moves her person round the board, makes suggestions in the correct format (Colonel Mustard, in the dining room, with the rope) but can't have her own cards or own notebook page to eliminate clues. But she's happy with that level of involvement while she can't read so it seems to work.

Anyone know of any other decent board games which could work in a similar way - parents and 8yo can play properly and 4yo (she'll be 4 by Xmas but only just) can "join in" to a degree, without spoiling it for the rest of us?

We really enjoyed cooperative games at that age. Forbidden Island was a huge favourite.

Dixit, Dragonwood, Monopoly!

My first Carcassonne is a firm favourite with my 7 and 4 year olds.

Labyrinth, Enchanted Forest (both favourites from my childhood so glad my kids love them) and Ghost Castle are also popular.

Forbidden Island, Labyrinth, Monopoly Junior, Ticket to Ride First Edition

APurpleSquirrel · 10/10/2022 23:46

Dinosaurs Galore! is good for younger children but my 8yo enjoys it & was playing it with her DB (5) earlier today.
Junior Monopoly might be ok with help for the 4yo.
Dobble - particularly the younger versions like Gruffalo Dobble or Animal Dobble.

RelentlessForwardProgress · 10/10/2022 23:48

Ticket to ride (she can put the train counters down on the routes)

Wingspan (they can put the eggs in the aviary)

Wingspan is marked 10+ but my bright 8 year old has been playing it since his 7th birthday.

If you put the game names into YouTube you can watch a tutorial or whole game played out to help them learn the rules.

Your 4yo would be able to play parts of Jumanji

Thanks for all these suggestions - and the YouTube suggestion, that's a great idea.

Sorry!
Cadoo

Labyrinth?

Yy to carcassonne and labyrinth. Ive used main game carcassonne with an eight year old but i can well imagine the kids carcassonne would be a little easier and even better. Yy to sorry or any Ludo varient. Love dobble so very very often unexpectedly funny.

Forbidden Island tended to cause ructions in our house. But we are not good with co-operative games as one of mine was always determined to make the losing move regardless of "helpful" suggestions. Still played it a fair bit though.

Pixar destination animation is awesome if you get hold of it. It periodically comes back into print. Love the fact you have a winner but essentially everyone gets a reward at the end.

Camel up. Not my favourite but everyone else loves betting on those camels

Small box games: Sardines and pass the pigs. Tinderbox might work depending on how dextrose your child is.

I wouldn’t touch ticket to ride . There are so many games that age you can properly, why would you bother with one you can't. Save it for when you can properly enjoy it with them.

Boardgamegeek is a useful website for reading up on games.

Thanks, I will take a look at that.

Our faves that my children played from that age were:

Sorry!

Giant SORRY! Classic Family Board Game Indoor Outdoor Retro Party Activity with Oversized Gameboard & Pieces, for Kids and Adults Ages 6 & up amzn.eu/d/eUo6ndi

Uno extreme:

Deal of the day for Prime Members: UNO Extreme Card Game Featuring Random-Action Launcher with Lights & Sounds & 112 Cards, Kid, Teen & Adult Game Night Gift Ages 7 Years & Older amzn.eu/d/9Ds61IL

And whilst we didn't have the game at that age, if you selected the tasks carefully, taskmaster would be a hit too!

Special Edition Official Taskmaster The Board Game - Compete Against Family & Friends In Ludicrous Tasks With Final Video Tasks From Alex Horne - Will You Be Crowned The Champion? By Ginger Fox Games amzn.eu/d/cObkRhH

I have an 8yo and a 5yo, and a massive selection of board games. The only ones to hold the 5yo's attention, however, have been: Kingdomino, dobble and King of Tokyo.

Not board games so maybe you already have these, but Jenga, Dobble and Uno are ideal to include very young players. The Eye Found it board game is meant to be a good collaborative one too, and a lot of the Haba board games.
