What are you buying your uni student DC’s?

Dd has just started uni, setting her up with all she needed cost a small fortune so I haven’t got a fortune to spend on Christmas but would like to get her a few nice gifts, there’s one clothing item she has asked for but other than that I haven’t got a clue, obviously don’t want anything that’s going to clutter up her room (space is limited) and no vouchers as she’s got a lot of issues around food and doesn’t do Costa or anything similar. Any ideas?

Non food consumables like fancy shower gels, nice shampoo and conditioner?

jocktamsonsbairn · 09/10/2022 20:26

Get her a lovely personalised planner from Papier using a referral on the referrals link. I'd give you mine but don't think I'm going to buy anything else from there so someone else should benefit.
Sign up for the Papergang offer on the last bargain thread - the one about the turtle doves as the content is lovely for the £3-£4 postage but not worth £15! There's some good stationery for her.

If the ok beauty box deal is still on there's some great stuff in there for £5-7.50 (different people had different deals). All in that bargain thread.
If her room is cold buy a snuggly blanket, fake oodie, long hot water bottle etc.
silk pillowcase.

Really nice toiletries that will seem like a treat.

Vouchers for cinema/theatre/local event to uni etc.

Branded uni Hoodie/sweatshirt.

Games to play with flatmate.

Nice suitcase for travel.

Cash is king
Dont waste money buying bits of stuff that they dont want or need.

Ragwort · 09/10/2022 20:33

Agree with Chips we always give our Uni DS cash, I still make a small 'stocking' full of toiletries, chocolates etc but he doesn't really even want that, I just do it for myself Blush.

DangerousMouse · 09/10/2022 20:35

I'm getting my DD a heated blanket, a nice jacket from All Saints she's been wanting and some gift vouchers for starbucks, Greggs etc

Discovereads · 09/10/2022 20:36

Mine is on a sports team so we are buying her some new top end sports gear.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 09/10/2022 20:37

Since I left home for Uni, I really didn't expect anything from parents. It was nice when they got me lovely pjs when I styed home. Gift I appreciated was money, or something I wanted, though I always felt happy about whatever they got me as small token gift.

For a student she has quite a lot of cash, probably more than me.

I bought her a lovely planner to take to uni and so far she hasn’t even touched it 😬. She’s not really a lover of ‘things’ and tends to only like the basics when it comes to toiletries. She doesn’t wear make up or jewellery. She doesn’t like spending money unless it’s in gaming gear.

I was thinking about getting her the dunelm pillow thing so she could sit up in bed on her laptop.

Maybe I could do her a hamper of snacks, though it will mainly contain Pringles as that’s about all she eats.

She says that the stocking is the best bit about Christmas it I went into her room the other day (after she left for uni) and found a bag full of stocking presents from last year, all untouched.

The item of clothing she wants is £50 so I don’t really need to buy loads more, I could always buy her a t-shirt from the same place. She’s quite fussy with clothes and I don’t think I can get her a voucher for any of the places she likes, she also buys clothes from vinted rather than new.

What about a foodie stocking, snacks, posh pesto/pasta, some meal kits like Thai curry etc, some cans of mixed cocktails, something like Cards Against Humanity to play with her friends

DangerousMouse · 09/10/2022 20:46

one of those trays with a bean cushion under it to eat a meal in her room

DangerousMouse · 09/10/2022 20:47

A digital photo frame?

mrwalkensir · 09/10/2022 20:48

Yes to comfy fleecy blankets/oodies etc. Also fairy lights and room diffusers. That went for our sons and daughters. Creates cosy atmosphere in the grey months. Also possibly SAD light?

DangerousMouse · 09/10/2022 20:49

One of those kits where you can grow your own plant

I think that’s what I will do. She’s pretty fussy with food, she has ASD and AFRAID (very limited diet) but she does like Pringles, pop tarts and kinder bueno 🤣, the only take away she eats is domino’s but I guess I could put a voucher for dominoes in her stocking?

Grow your own plant is a good idea also, she said lots of her flat mates have cacti.

DD is first year at Uni. I will set her a budget and ask for a list, usually consists of clothes and makeup then she has cash from her Dad and Grandparents. She always has a stocking which always consists of the same things - chocolates, socks, body wash. I usually get her a couple of small things she hasnt asked for, may get her an Oodie this year but not sure her halls are cold yet.

Oblomov22 · 09/10/2022 20:52

Not planning on anything! Spent quite a bit on things he needed. So just planning a couple of small little bits.

ShaunaTheSheep · 09/10/2022 20:53

Insulated coffee mug or Chilly bottle.

But yes, cash (or rather a bank transfer) to spend on whatever they want is most acceptable.

I'll be doing small stockings of mainly edibles for the holiday period. They don't want to be lugging cheap toiletries and trinkets back to uni on public transport.

I got DD the cuddle cushion thing from Dunelm last year and it's been a winner! It has helped with sitting up in bed on her laptop doing work. I was thinking of getting one of those laptop trays (like a wee table) but worry I'm enabling the staying in bed thing!

Hop27 · 10/10/2022 07:45

An emotional support water bottle?

PostPopper · 10/10/2022 09:09

A novelty pizza cutter to go with the Dominoes voucher ?

KangarooKenny · 10/10/2022 09:15

My girls like the jogging suits from Zara. Lots of colours to choose from.
