Board games that are actually fun for just 2

I'd like to get a board game for dd 12

On Christmas Day there will be a bunch of us, but usually it's just me and her. Lots of games say suitable for 2+ players but often aren't much fun as a 2.

MNHQ Update
This thread is a little out of date now, but if you've come across it while on the hunt for board game recommendations, our guide to the best family board games has been recently updated. It includes a wide range of options - many of which are suitable for 2+ players - and all come tried, tested and recommended by Mumsnet users. We hope it's helpful! Flowers

We are shit at board games. Bought Carcassonne but never understood it so it ended up in a charity shop. Clearly we need games that we(I) can understand within seconds. I cant be arsed with complicated rules and boards. In the past have enjoyed Yahtzee,Othello Scrabble. Pass the Pigs...and more recently Linkee.
What is idiot proof and quick to learn?
No young kids only teens and adults

Have a look for how to play video explainers on YouTube - we are really keen gamers but often watch a video rather than wade through the rule book.

Labyrinth is very easy to understand and also fun. You’re basically trying to work your way round a maze to collect items, making yourself a route by moving tiles.

We also like Bandido, which is a cooperative game where you lay maze cards down to try and block a convict from escaping prison. I clearly like games with mazes

And yet we found it utterly boring. Better off just playing normal cards.

I like exploding kittens, but not as a 2 player. It needs a big group, or younger children to make it fun, IMO.

A great, simple 2 player game is Mr Jack.

I quite like games where you do your own thing, and score at the end, which works equally well regardless of numbers, e.g. quadropolis, dice hospital, project L. "The Game" is the two player game we play most often.
