Looking for advice from parents.

is an Apple Watch a suitable present for a 14 year old boy?

thinking about Christmas presents. His younger sister needs a new iPad but I don’t really think he would get as much use - he already has an older model.

Depends if he will use it surely?

Age doesn't come into it, but it's definitely a gift you'll need to be sure he will get use out of as it's not as 'universal' as an iPad is

That’s a generous present. I’d speak to his parents about it. Nb also a lot of schools don’t allow children to wear them.

Stripedbag101 · 24/09/2022 10:28

I suppose that’s what I am
asking from those who know teenagers. Is it a gadget more suited to adults or are teenagers into them.

I appreciate teenage boys are a broad church. Maybe there is no answer.

I usually spend a couple of hundred each on them. His sister is easy and has long, long lists😂.

He is into techie stuff and for the last few years I have given him cash towards equipment. But this year I would like to give him a wow present.

Our daughter received an Apple Watch as a gift when she was confirmed. She uses it a lot for sport (she's a swimmer), which is useful, but we generally really wish she hadn't got it. She has it linked to her mobile 'phone, meaning that even when she doesn't have her phone in her hand (which is rare - I think she's surgically attached), she still gets messages through on the watch. It's basically just another distraction and there are times when it's difficult to even have a conversation with her without her looking at it or fiddling with it. We're sorry she received it.

I have no experience re it being a suitable gift for a teenage boy, but DH bought me one as a surprise for my birthday and I think I wore it twice. Found numerous styles of the strap really uncomfortable and just generally didn’t like it.

My son is 13 and we got him another branded smart watch last year, we will probably upgrade it to an Apple Watch in a couple of years. He likes seeing how many steps he’s done, resting heart rate etc.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 24/09/2022 10:43

@GiltEdges
I got a strap for mine that’s similar to a scrunchie and it’s so much more comfortable.

I would suggest asking his parents. They’ll know if he’d like it, but more importantly, it may well be something they’re considering buying themselves if he would like it. Spending that much on a nephew / niece is very generous, but may well not leave a lot left for the parents to buy.

My 15yr old daughter loves hers. She uses it for fitness tracking mainly but obviously it has a myriad of other functions. It helps if he is into the apple ecosystem too as the watch works seamlessly with airpods and the fitness+ app, etc.

Does he have an iPhone ?

Both dd and I have apple watches. Neither of us wore watches before but wear an Apple Watch daily.

We both like the calendar options - useful when teaching (or at school/university for dd) as my timetable is listed and I can see at a glance where I am supposed to be.

Also I can't have my phone out at work but I can have it in my locked cupboard nearby. I can still see and read any text messages or emails I receive, and can see if anyone is calling me, which has been useful at times. I can technically call and answer but don't usually.

For holidays I have my wallet on there so boarding pass is readily available. I also have Apple Pay so can pay with my watch very quickly. Dd has her debit card in hers, I have my credit card. You can have more than one and switch between too.

We don't really do exercise as such so don't use those features so much. Though as we both have had issues with tachycardia that aspect is useful certainly when I was being diagnosed and getting treatment having the record at hand was great at the medial appointments,

I do find the standard strap a bit sticky if in holiday I very hit humid places, so I'm considering a material strap for those times. But day to day it's fine.

I now wear a watch (Apple Watch) daily but never wore one before.

He is I to gadgets and has an iPhone and iPad (the iPad was from me a couple of christmases ago)

he is in a running club and goes to the gym a lot.

he doesn’t currently wear a watch.

I will talk to his mum and dad.

I am getting his sister a new iPad but he doesn’t need one so I though this would be a similar exciting present.

he is getting a bike from his parents so this shouldn’t outshine that!!!
