At a loss for DS1 (15)

He is a lovely lad but extremely hard to buy for!

  • not into buying clothes yet
  • Doesn't need or want a new phone or other tech
  • just not that into 'stuff' in general
  • doesn't like going out to McDonald's or cinema etc (a homebody and not a fan of busy places) - his main hobby is D&D but all his campaigns take place over Discord so doesn't even need so much as a d20
  • has £££ in his bank account as he never spends any. So giving more money is not really going to mean anything to him

So far on the list is:

  • a new Warrior Cats book he's asked for
  • a new mouse for his PC
  • a onesie

In any other year I think this would be enough along with some sweets etc, but this year DS2 is getting a new gaming PC (He's saved up all year, we're not paying for the whole thing!) and I worry DS1's presents will look a bit meagre alongside!

Any ideas welcome...

What does he say when you ask him?

Bananajuice · 23/09/2022 18:55

It's not much but my teenagers loved their smart light bulbs I got for them last year

Thelifeofawife · 23/09/2022 18:56

My son is similar, though starting to get into clothes now.
How about a new monitor (or a second one, my son loves having 2) or desk for his PC?
For a cheaper gift you could get him a new mouse mat - the long ones that cover the length of the desk look good and there’s lots of designs on Amazon

IglesiasPiggl · 23/09/2022 18:58

A cool chair for his desk maybe?

Nadal · 23/09/2022 18:58

Gaming keyboard or headphones?

MegBusset · 23/09/2022 19:02

We've asked if he'd like a new chair, he says no thank you, he's happy with the one he has (an old but serviceable office chair). (He can be resistant to change and likes to keep stuff he's used to and comfortable with. Trying to persuade him to get eg the next size up trainers as his feet grow is a nightmare!)

His desk isn't big enough for a second monitor, and his room isn't big enough for a bigger desk

Mouse mat is a good idea, wonder if I could find a D&D themed one

Following for my 15yo ds who is exactly the same except not even a D&D hobby!

Gaming keyboard or headphones?

Doesn't want a gaming keyboard, already has headphones

Same age son - we’re getting a watch (like his Dad’s) and a posh pen that he saw when we were shopping for fathers’ day.
He also rarely asks for anything.

I would try Etsy they're good for DnD branded things I bought my husband a little bag for some fancy dice recently. Is he into reading at all? There are fictional books based on DnD lands called Dragonlance Chronicles he might like. Husband suggested that although he is playing virtually the actual physical rule books are nice to have and there are expanded ones.

That's a blast from the past! I adored the Dragonlance books as a similarly D&D-type teen. He's fussy with books but might enjoy them.

My DS will be 15 by Xmas. As a stoking fillers - im getting him his first razor and foam.
Led strip lights for under his bed or behind his TV/monitor. My DS loves his.
Upgrading single bed to double?
Feather duvet and a nice new duvet cover?
Personalised stationary?
The other year I made him a hot chocolate station (different flavours, syrups, toppings, a nice cup all on a nice tray) - the downside, he still loves it and I have to top it up most months!
Bluetooth speaker?

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 23/09/2022 23:34

My DS is exactly the same so I always try to get things he will use.
previous hits were
Oodie
pillopad for iPad
large customised mouse mat from Redbubble
large soft velour bed throw with gaming logo from Redbubble
hot chocolate bombs
christmas hot chocolate glass mug
personalised spoon from Royal Spoons on Etsy (we had a Nutella one)
playstation glass
Brownie mix in a mug
Apart from two minor gifts in relation to his only hobby, I’m stumped this year!

mam0918 · 24/09/2022 09:36

Does he have a gaming mouse mat? apparently thats a thing, I bought DS one last year lol.

Does he have any fandoms? Stranger Things is D&D based and theres loads of merch for that right now.

daisydalrymple · 24/09/2022 10:22

My dd is 13 and loves warrior cats, she has the in-between series graphic novels, does he have any of those? I think they can be read independent of the series, but not sure?. We’ve had a struggle getting some of the series, so could you consider getting a complete next series?

and Hello! I remember your username from SIFTW many moons ago, I think our ds are a day apart in age. I have had name changes since over the years, but it’s rare to see a familiar name these days 😍

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/09/2022 11:25

Does he like Stranger Things? Maybe tickets to the Stranger Things experience?

Mollymoofer · 24/09/2022 11:50

I was going to ask about Stranger Things too - great minds and all that!

what about LED strip lights around the cornice area of this room? Popular among younger teens just now and noticed quite a few in halls when we dropped our DD off at uni too.

Driving experience for juniors?

DelilahBucket · 24/09/2022 12:11

American snacks and sodas went down extremely well with DS last year. Even things like Pop Tarts.
He also really liked a blanket I got him for his room and sits under it when he's gaming.
Portable charger for his phone.
Torch.
LED words light for his wall.
A sample pack of different aftershaves and also the same for hair products (he was just starting to get into grooming).

MistressIggi · 24/09/2022 12:14

An Alexa and a Spotify subscription?

HerkyBaby · 24/09/2022 12:16

What about a good old fashioned Lego set. The official Lego store has a huge range of adult appropriate kits.

Bbq1 · 24/09/2022 12:20

A shower radio
Prwmiu. shower products
Personalised bath towel
Personalised throw
Oodie type hoodie
Can you get D&D funko pops?

Apart from D&D his fandoms are pretty niche - he is obsessed with an obscure US music artist who doesn't tour and has v limited merch (all of which he already has, as that was my idea for his last birthday!) and his other thing is solving online cryptography puzzles and insanely hard Roblox puzzles. He watched the first series of Stranger Things but didn't get into it in a big way.

Hah, now that I have a lanky 15yo who stays in bed until midday at every opportunity it's hard to believe that he was once a total sleep refusenik!

I'll look up the Warrior Cats graphic novels, thanks. I think he has all the main series apart from the new one, which is the one thing he's asked for.

You are describing my DS nearly 15yo! And perfectly describing my dilemma too.

We are getting DS some Oakley sunglasses after he took a fancy to DH’s when we were away in the summer.

I will definitely do edibles, as mine is a foodie and likes the finer things in life, but I can’t do too many as he gains weight easily (like me) and has poor impulse control (again, like me)

Ideas we’ve had and either done before or rejected are - wireless headphones, new bed linen, Bluetooth clock radio, a filled wash bag for him to go away, Coca Cola pencil case and stationery for school, watch, tickets for plays/shows/sports events.
