How much are you intending to spend on stocking fillers per child? Are you cutting back this year?

Stockings are my absolute favourite so we go all out in our household. I don’t really have a budget . I think I spent about £100-£150 last year on both my two kids stockings . I did a stocking for my husband too and it came to about £150 if I remember correctly . His main gift was only £50 😆

We are not cutting back this year. Due to personal reasons , I’m looking to make this Christmas extra special . I don’t mean with presents but more so with extra special touches around the holiday season.

Stockings are the most exciting part here (even for the non believers) so I have been known to go a bit mad! They’re fairly big stockings and usually contain 30ish items, about ten of which are things that Father Christmas has put in the stockings every single year such as a new tree decoration, a tube of sweets, a toothbrush, chocolate coins, a shiny coin. This year I’m cutting down to 20 items, not so much for money but just trying to reduce consumption and excesses in general. Also we have guests coming who don’t get as much in theirs so trying to close the gap a bit.

So for example teen ds will have the usual items plus mostly lynx, prime 🙄, and Pringles, teen dd will have the usual items plus face masks, some crystals, perfume, younger dc will get the usual items plus a couple of small toys, some bubbles, a surprise egg, hair bobbles…

We do stockings at the end of the bed, and sacks under the tree. Completely different purposes - the stockings are there to simply tell the dc that Santa’s been and to give them something to open when they wake at silly hours during the night. The sacks have to be opened as a family in the morning and contain all the main gifts.
Stockings have a budget of £20
Sacks are £100

Yes this was the way we did it as dcs were growing up, just small token stocking fillers to keep them amused until a more suitable hour for going downstairs. Anything bigger/ more expensive than socks or pants went with the main presents.

Stockings were always from Santa.

Dont do stockings now that they’re adults as too much faff looking specifically for ‘stocking’ presents So anything I do pick up now (big or small) gets added to their Gift bags for under the tree.

We have replaced stockings for our children with small presents, they always get a chocolate orange and the grandchildren get giant tubes. We then buy a few small ( price) presents like second hand books, or one from the works for our children parents and partners do stockings

Cuwins · 21/10/2022 12:12

I have set a budget of £30 for DD. She will be 10m so will have no idea but it's a tradition I want to do.
Technically hers is a Santa sack so larger than a traditional stocking but similar in size to the pillowcase I always had that was called my stocking. However stockings in my house were always the cheaper bits that came from Santa, my main presents under the tree were from family. I intend to do the same with DD.
So far I have spent £21 on a mixture of useful and fun stuff. All either 2nd hand or brought in the sale: stacking cups, toy animals (nice wooden ones), bath book (that was free), a new cup, paint brushes, a board book, toy car, bath toy, dinosaur hand puppet, slinky, toddler cutlery and choc coins (always had in stockings in my house). Will add an orange as my partner always had that. May well add some toiletries or socks/vests etc.

Annoyed200722 · 21/10/2022 19:14

Yes. In recent years we've spent £50-60 on each. This year, both children have asked for a reasonably pricey main present and things are defiantly tighter than normal, so I'm cutting back to £35 each. I'll pad out with nice sweets/ chics and doubt they'll notice!

RoseMartha · 21/10/2022 21:39

Abt £15 per stocking for two teen girls
I try to find make up or toiletries bargains/ special offers through the year then add chocolate and sweets.
Usually 5-6 items

orangetriangle · 22/10/2022 11:58

I do one for my niece who is 4 but always look for bargains in the year it is always little bits to be honest if little value ours were the same when we were younger main presents downstairs
thinks I put in hers are for example
chocolate coins
chocolate father xmas
xmas socks from poundland
tiny doll
unicorn surprise egg
hair toggles
lol hairbrush cheap from poundland
sweets
colouring book
pencils
stickers
she always really happy with it and actually it has cost very little you dont need to spend pounds on xmas stocking
for my own daughter as a teenager before she moved out it would be things like
face masks
bath bombs
nice soap
chocolate
hit chocolate sachets
make up
socks
tights
hair bits
in ear headphones
gloves
nice pen
diary

again you not need to spend loads

ItsFlippingBoiling · 22/10/2022 18:33

Everyone who stays the night gets one
This year
3 teenagers
3 in 20s
2 in 80s
4 in 50s
3 dogs

I am cutting down to 6 items each. My Dc always got all their gifts from Santa but they now know all about him! (they are the 20s). They will also get cash
Everyone will get chocolate/sweets and alcohol and then 4 more things. Got beauty gifts for 2 of them
Dogs are done (bed/blanket, toy, balls, K9 strips and treats) as are Octogenarians (shoes, whisky, chanel)
No tat

Plus making own crackers as the new plastic free/fully recyclable that are everywhere are just total tat.

ItsFlippingBoiling · 22/10/2022 18:34

Oh and satsuma, coal and sugar mouse

Xmasbaby11 · 22/10/2022 19:29

I have DD 8 and 10. They get the same in their stockings and they usually cost around £30-40. It will probably be the same this year. By the time we open the main presents several hours later , they are paying less attention, so I think it's worth having a few good items. they will both have:

nice colouring pens
erasable writing pens
pencil sharpeners
small sketch pad
bath bombs / bubble bath
hair bobbles etc
bed socks
an annual (Roblox / Jacqueline Wilson)
a book
sweets / chocs - maybe some marshmallows and American sweets

Possibly more - They are very easy to buy for so I am trying to control myself! They also both have birthdays in Jan so I tend to buy some things and divide it up nearer the time.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 22/10/2022 22:52

I try to stick below £50 each stocking. Some times i spend less and sometimes it’s more, depends on what I find , I try too make sure they have the same amount of things as arguments will ensue.

whattodo2019 · 23/10/2022 02:24

We all have 'sacks' rather than stockings, these are from Father Christmas.
I spend about £200 on my DD 17 and DS15. They include-
PJs- lounger checked
Makeup
Boxers/ pants/ Socks
Books
Game
Sweets
Hair accessories
Silk pillow case
Slippers
Perfume/ aftershave
Body wash/ shampoo/ conditioner
Face wash and products
T shirt
Gift card ie starbucks
etc....

The kids have this and a main present under the tree. There are no other presents usually under the tree.

Cluckycluck · 23/10/2022 07:41

I try not to go overboard on the stockings and I was aiming for £50 max although I haven't totted up what I've bought yet. I'm mainly trying to cut out buying tat for the sake of filling a stocking, unless it will be absolutely loved by DD.

I've definitely done better than last year so far...

Percy Pigs
Percy Pig blondie kit
Mini butterfly kite
Nutella biscuit tube
Chocolate coins
Chocolate figure
Fluffy socks
Bath slime
Mini shortbread stars
Mermaid scratch art
Unicorn stickers
Unicorn letter writing set
Hair clips
Fan
Trinket pot
Unicorn slime
Mini note book
Mouthwash (honestly this will be her favourite thing in the stocking, she's dying to be able to use mouthwash)

I'm planning on wrapping today and seeing what space is left. I've got a new stocking this year that is slightly bigger so I'm unsure on how much it is going to take to fill, I do like it to be completely stuffed.

YuliaJollyberry · 23/10/2022 07:54

Everyone waking up on the day gets a stocking here. We like them to be properly stuffed too although they are stretchy knitted ones and by having things at not the most sensible angle they always appear to be bulging and no one’s noticed the reduction in quantities over the last few years. Older now and they are more expensive as toiletries/cosmetics are better than the everyday variety the rest of the year.

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/10/2022 08:47

About £50 each on stocking bits. I really try to avoid cheap bits that will break or go to landfill, so I end up spending more than I would like but I can't bring myself to fill it with bits costing £1 that are a bit rubbish.

Then about £50 each on other gifts from us.

Cuddlywuddlies · 23/10/2022 09:09

I don’t do stockings, I do a Christmas sack. They get (depending on price)1-2 main gifts from Santa, 1-2 main gifts from us and a sack of items like DS 6 last year got-
a book
an annual
underwear
socks
bubble bath
small Lego sets x2
a hoody
chocolate orange
a tub of hairbo
drinks bottle for school
colours
a travel pillow
And a few other things I can’t remember…

I don’t like to buy useless cheap tat…it’s a waste imo.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/10/2022 12:01

I have stockings for my adult DC -beautiful tapestry with lights
That's for their proper presents though , they tend to be small and £ .
We dont have a tree (cats) and no presents left in the space where there should be a tree .

I do a Dec 1st Bag ( jumbo sized re-used each year ) for their pyjamas. robe , underwear, socks , some toiletries and the Advent Calendars
I used to do a Beauty Advent for DD but it was getting more difficult to find things ! She knows this year her Beauty Gifts will be in the Dec 1st Bag
Things like skincare (Sukin , Mario Badescu) nail polish, lipbalm, cuticle cream

Theu get more use from them through December .
Probably £100 each

DS has money for his main present (and a December Birthday ) at his request
DD does a present list ( clothes mainly) or I get her a gift voucher
