Presents that turned out to be disappointing

Wondering if it might be handy to
share gifts that actually turned out to be a bit of a let down and why.

Last christmas got my DD a yoto. Thought it would be amazing. It's barely been used, she's not got the slightest interest in it. Gets bored of the cards after 5 seconds. Prefers a book.

Not for DC's, but for me. My much loved tablet had died and was no longer in product so DH bought me an all singing - all dancing Samsung tablet. It's rubbish. I have two apps on it, and it keeps telling me it is out of memory. Resetting back to factory settings made no difference. I have a memory card installed, but the tablet won't allow me to move anything on to it. Biggest disappointment ever. It is now languishing in a box somewhere and I am back to using my phone which has so much space available it is ridiculous. If I ever find the tablet again, I will wipe it clean and let dgs use it , assuming it can manage to store a kids app.

Barbie dreamhouse. £250... been played with probably twice at most. It was a joint main gift for them both and they both belly ached for it for months. Angry

Also have a Nintendo switch, which doesn't get touched atall. Need to charge it and sell it actually.

Springday15 · 12/10/2022 06:47

Read that as yoyo!

Clarabella72 · 12/10/2022 08:13

@Titsflyingsouth if you are missing bits playmobil will send out free replacements which could be worth doing if you have a set that would resell

Sweetchildofmine19 · 12/10/2022 21:13

Any of the Vtech toot toot stuff. My 3 year old has the garage, the parking tower, the 360 loop and tons of the cars. All of which he played with once when first got them then never again. Just not interested in it at all.

Mr Frosty!! Still bitter 30 years later 🤣

Laughed out loud at this. I'm with you here, what a croc of shit it was. After poring over it in the Argos catalogue for months 🤣

Our flop has been our generation dolls . They cost a fortune, are impossible to store , and dd doesn’t play with them.

PokemonPasta · 13/10/2022 07:37

A playhouse. When DC1 was a toddler they absolutely loved playhouses when we went anywhere with one. Bought a lovely wooden one for them the Christmas just after they turned two. Two more DC later it has been used as nothing more than a nicely decorated very short shed.

Yet another for kindle fire kids tablet. Ds won't touch his just wants our ipad.

illiterato · 13/10/2022 08:44

We gave a Nintendo Switch to someone who had no interest in it. Is gathering dust on a shelf.

Yeah- ours is very underused. They begged for it as wanted the Mario games like Luigi's mansion but literally never play them. DS plays Fortnite and FIFA on the PS4 and DD just isn't into gaming at all. Tbf I also thought I would use it as I loved Mario on the old 64 but sadly seems I've grown out of it.

There’s no point wasting money on a tablet for kids unless it’s an iPad. iPads are designed to be figured out intuitively with exceptionally good operating systems which makes them perfect for little ones. If it’s not an iPad don’t waste your money.

TwitcherLady · 13/10/2022 09:28

Poopsie surprise unicorn. £50 for a unicorn doll that sits on a potty and poops. Used literally once. Biggest waste of money ever spent! My dd used her birthday money to buy it and now puts much more thought into what she wants to spend money on!!! 😁

We have Samsungs and had Kurios and non of our kids have had any issues at all.

This just seems like pushing your personal brand opinion.

See, the Yoto is hands down one of the best things we’ve ever got for DS

mondaytosunday · 13/10/2022 09:43

My in laws got my son a really cool microscope. He never took it out of the box - he just wasn't interested, but I could see another child might have thought it the best present ever!
I also find that a kid might go on and on about something but when they actually get it lose interest - like people who love to shop but once they buy something it never comes out of the bag. Or they are just going along with the cool thing at school but have no real interest in it themselves.
Getting something too complicated or time consuming to set up is a pain too, as kids are not known for their patience!

snugglyblanket · 13/10/2022 10:14

Our DC love their Kindle Fires, DS had no trouble with his from a very young age. Their Switch is one of the most used items in our house now that DS is old enough to set it up himself.

A few years ago DD was desperate for a sewing machine but couldn't be bothered learning how to use it. Now taking up space in her room back in its box.

Fancy dress items have always been a flop with DS. Ditto arts & crafts but DD loves both when she was same age.

Any games that take several people and hours to complete 😂 (teen) DD loves board games but she cheats and nobody will play with her any more! DS gets bored too quickly.

Moro93 · 13/10/2022 10:35

This really isn't true, both my kids have Kindle fire tablets and absolutely love them. They started off with the 7 and have recently had upgrades to the fire 8. I have 2 iPads (air and pro) and although both enjoy getting turns drawing with the Apple pencil, they absolutely love playing their Kindles.

Personally, they're nowhere near as good as iPads but are well suited to younger kids. A lot cheaper as well as some families may not be able to afford iPads.

Ashadeofgreen55 · 13/10/2022 11:23

All children are different!

Mine absolutely loved Playmobil and played with it endlessly right up until they were twelve and thirteen (by which point they were making models themselves).

And my dds loved playing with dolls, dressing then up, bathing and feeding them etc.

We also had a pretend restaurant that they played with for hours!

Very sadly, the microscope they were given was played with once as was the ukelele.

Wetblanket78 · 26/12/2022 01:20

Kindle do take a while to get used to. I got them hoping to reduce the number of books we have. But they don't like it on Kindle. There are some tablets specifically for children that are easier for them to navigate. Mine prefer they're iPad and ipod touch. Which are unfortunately no longer made.
