Best car/train set for 1yo ds

Can anyone recommend a good first car or train set for a 1 year old? I've been looking at toot toot, happy land and little people but have no idea what would be best for him. I'd ideally like something that can be added to as he gets a bit older.
Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations based on their experiences? TIA

It depends on exactly what you want and exactly how your one year old. If they are only just one, things like Toot Toot will really grab their attention. If they are nearer 2, I would go with Brio or a similar wooden set-up. We bought a basic wooden set when our eldest was 20months. It has only just gone away now, and out your great at is 7. Most played with toy in our house!

A Brio one (or a cheaper one that’s compatible… so far we have found Chad Valley and Aldi ones are compatible). Otherwise I recommend getting the duplo number train, (you can add to it with the animal train, unicorn train etc) and get the ‘proper’ electric duplo train and track next year when he’s old enough to enjoy it more as it’s all compatible and you can make quite a long train.
Also FYI our aldi electric train literally eats batteries. We maybe get thirty mins of play per battery change. Also it struggles to stay on the tracks around corners. 🤦‍♀️

I’d go for Duplo, but not the number train, just the regular one.

Duplo

Whizz World are chunky and have magnetic connections - we were given some second hand ones which he liked, and so I then supplemented with a bus and a train for Xmas when DS was just over 1yo.

we have also acquired some toot toot but he was older when started paying attention to that.

We have some second hand happyland stuff in the family at cousins’ houses but I’m not minded to buy any more of it, it does look quite bulky!

I am eagerly anticipating the Brio years (DS still a bit young to fully appreciate). I love wooden railways.

Youngest Dc got the duplo train set for Christmas when he was 1. He has had other track sets for birthday & Christmas to add to it. We also had a lot of duplo already which works well with it all. He is 3.5 now and still plays with it most days. Eldest DC’s had Happyland but the never enjoyed it, Brio didn’t do it either.

Thank you for all your replies so far! Will definitely investigate Duplo now.

We have duplo, wooden and thomas track master and honestly the wooden is the best and gets the most play.

The wooden track is just the most versatile, you can mix and match across loads of different brands (we have a mix of ikea, brio and lidl) so its easy to add to as you go along. Some of the bridges are really cool!

Its also the easiest to put together and make different track shapes. My children never make up track on their own for the duplo or track master, but they do for the wooden set.

Duplo trains are quite expensive and you don't get a lot of add -on sets (like extra engines).
I'd definitely go for a wooden one. If a train engine exists in real life there's probably a wooden train set version out there.

Thanks for the link @Fivemoreminutes1 and to everyone else who has taken the time to respond.
Definitely lots to look at and decide what will be best for him!

Our DSs had Brio which was added to (bridges, engines, engine shed, train station, crane, trees, people, etc) each birthday and at Christmas. Our 2 year old DGS now plays with it and absolutely loves it!
