My son is desperate for one for Christmas, but I know nothing about them. For a start I wouldn't typically spend anything like that amount of money on something, so he's going to use some vouchers he already has plus have it as a joint birthday and Christmas present. So a lot is riding on it being a good choice!

Firstly, are there ever any deals on them? Seems like it's £399 for headset and hand held controllers plus Beat Sabre game for a 125gb memory, or £499 for the same but with more memory.

Secondly, do we need more memory? How many games does the 'basic' 125gb memory hold?

Finally, is it easy to set up? I have a Facebook account so guess it would need to be in my name and linked to that (my son doesn't have Facebook) but do we need anything else? I have a laptop but no desktop for example.

Thanks!

Bumping as I'm also looking at this for my DC.

I’d make sure they’ve tried them first before wanting them as their actual purchase, we were gifted one and it make all of us nauseous pretty quickly - and I love rollcoasters!! So just make sure the kids have tried them out somewhere before you invest

I've been wondering similar as my DC has asked for one. How much are the games? Do you need to buy extra games?

I've had VR for about 5 years now and currently have the Quest. First don't bother with the extra memory. He'll find a few games that he likes and keeps on the headset, and it's really easy to unistall and reinstall the less frequently used ones. It's an easy setup, you don't have to link them to a FB account anymore, and there's lots of free and cheap content. The premium stuff is expensive, but no more so than any other platform. Motion sickness can be a problem, I get it terribly on anything than involves flying, but I just avoid those games. Honestly go for it. You'll be pinching it once he's gone to bed.

One thing to watch depending on age of child is games like VRChat. Really inappropriate stuff on there, people can change their avatars to images of porn. And the teens in there can be vile, depending who is on. It's such a shame as I hear little kids voices when I'm on sometimes, they shouldn't be allowed on it. There's a few good games on VRChat but ruined by the twats.

Other games that allow chat are Altspace, VTime and Population One (which is like Fortnite). Think Walkabout Mini golf does too but not heard anything bad about that one.

Beat Saber and Synth Riders are amazing though!

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know that the higher priced edition with extra memory isn't worth bothering with. He has a few friends who own one so has tried it out - unfortunately, that's why he wants one! I can't see it coming down in price but he does have birthday vouchers to also put towards it.
