Tonibox Vs To Vs cd player with Bluetooth

Obviously cost is a massive factor in the above but wondering if the independence of the first two makes them worth it for a 4 year old. For the cd player we can borrow story CDs for free from library or connect with Bluetooth for audiobooks for free from the library with my phone but then he'd have to ask to do that. The initial outlay for the first two would be manageable but I can't see how it's worth £10 a times for audio books when I can get them for free!

Supposed to say Toni box, yoto player or cd player

No experience of Yoto players but we got a tonie box for DS for his 4th birthday and he loves it! Before that, he used to spend ages sat next to an old CD player playing music. He wasn't great at putting the CDs away though so some of them started getting scratched.

The tonie box is much more durable and really easy for kids to use. It comes with a creative tonie that you can upload anything you want to. This is good because we can add new stories and update the music if he starts to get bored of it.

The tonies are expensive but DS only has 3 - we asked other people to get them as his birthday presents - and he mainly listens to one of them plus the creative one over and over again.

I tried to buy a second hand one but they seem to hold their value well and weren't going for much less than new so hopefully when he gets too old for it we'll be able to sell it for a reasonable amount.

DS has a yoto box and gets loads of use out of it. The cards for the yoto box are much cheaper than the tonies and you can get blank ones to add your own stories to.
The yoto also has its own radio station and a morning podcast type show. I would say the yoto lasts longer for older children.

We have a tonies box for my 4 year old and its the best thing we have ever had. We use it at bedtime and playing too. The figures are a tad pricey when full price but they are often knocked down like 20% off. I have even picked some up for £4/5 in places like TK max and in smyths & john lewis sales. We have just used it on a long car journey too and it was great.

My DD1 has a CD player. She loves listening to albums and her audio cds. Apart from the kids radio feature I'm not sure how different the Yoto and Tonie players are to justify the price.

I would go for the Yoto player as there's more content and the additional features means it grows with your child. It's more versitle than the Tonie, with podcasts, radio station and the ability to use it as a bluetooth speaker.

My DS is 4 and loves his Tonie box. We’ve got about 11 figures he uses. They were between £10-15 new. The only thing I’d say is the paint does chip off from fairly light handling, so if you’re buying secondhand, just check they’re in good condition. Secondhand price is still around £10!!

Thank you, it sounds like there are advantages to the Toni in the it's user friendly for children and the yoto as it could be used with Bluetooth. Unfortunately I'm not sold on either as the cost is about 3 times the cost for a cd player and then infinitely more expensive than making use of the library Shock

Yoto over Tonie. You can make your own content and use that if needed (lots of hacks online too) plus there are a variety of free podcasts and radio stations that it plays.

Are you only planning on using it at home? One big advantage of both the Yoto and Tonie is how easy to are to use out and about, in the car etc. I know you can get portable CD players but they're not very robust for young children.

Bubblemilk · 29/08/2022 20:00

We have a cd player in the car, also an aux cable so can connect my phone if needed. I have a smaller Bluetooth speaker actually I could use that for a few weeks at home and see how much the ask for it!

@Bubblemilk Do you have an update on this? What did you go with in the end? I came across this thread after searching for the same topic and thinking along the same lines of Yoto/ Tonie vs Bluetooth cd player for my DCs bedroom. At the moment I’m veering towards a Yoto mini for but also considering the CD player option!

Bubblemilk · 25/02/2026 21:38

We kept with CD player- it's rarely used. They can both access my Spotify on the TV now anyway. Just couldn't justify the cost really and both of mine like reading so don't tend to listen to audio books. I still love the idea but not the ongoing cost of buying more books when really we get most of ours from library and have a few new books a years for presents.
