The snowman theatre for 16 month old

Hi, hoping someone can help.

I have a one year old I’d like to take to watch the snowman in December by which point she will be 16 months old.

has anyone taken their baby (or older kids), if so how was it? Did they sit in your lap and did they get a good view?

It says the show is for all ages and I think for the most part she’ll be ok and happy to watch but worried it might be too much. We would go with an aisle seat and have a buggy which we can collapse- is there a store area for this?

Do you mean the ballet in London?

There were a few babies when we went with older siblings. They weren't really watching though... it makes more sense if you know the story.

There was a pram park

Thesearmsofmine · 25/08/2022 10:50

I’ll be totally honest and say wait until next year or the year after when they will be far more interested.
When I’ve been to the theatre and tiny ones have been there(usually with older siblings) they have zero interest which is understandable and they often get bored and restless.

Greenbks · 25/08/2022 10:52

Hi, yes, over at peacock theatre. Thanks - that’s helps with the pram worry.

she likes to watch people/ things moving so hoping she will watch & enjoy some of it.

Im worried she might fidget and want to be put down or won’t get a good view in our laps. Will have a think and may delay to next year when she is a little older,

Thanks @Thesearmsofmine i think that is what I’ll end up doing. It’s a shame as I really wanted to go with her but worried it might be a bit much at her age,

It will be better when she's older. Its very easy sometimes to get caught up in the excitement and forget it will be on in the future.

I would recommend going to see some Christmas lights though. Or a walk through grotto type place with elves and animals.

Greenbks · 25/08/2022 11:47

I think so. We have booked Christmas at Kew with her so that’ll be more suited to her age. She’ll love being pushed around looking at all the lights

Ohh The Snowman theatre show is lovely and it's fairly short with an interval , but I'd say 16 months is too young .
I did feel sorry for a young boy who had to go to the loo and missed The Flying Scene .

My DS is nearly 23yo , I took him to see it when he was 5yo ( so it has been going a while Xmas Grin )

He still remembers bits of it , I took him to Hamleys and Garfunkles as well so we had a busy day .

MassiveSalad22 · 26/08/2022 11:35

Nah wait til next year.

Twilightstarbright · 27/08/2022 18:28

Definitely wait! Are you in London? There’s normally a Baby friendly show at Christmas aimed at the under 2s.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/08/2022 18:35

I would definitely leave it a few years. At 16 months you'll just be on edge and she won't really engage with it (and she may just get bored and angry and scream the place down).

I started taking DD to theatre at 2.5 years, just children shows to begin with like Milkshake live and then she could manage proper musicals by 4, shes 13 now and loves going to the theatre and its a lovely interest to share.

Things to be aware of when you do take your DD, this year or next year. The Snowman is a lovely idea. Pantomimes often dont go down well with young children there are always a few crying when the baddy gets booed.

Northern ballet often do a very short childrens ballet in the morning and early afternoon when they bring a full ballet for the evening slot. They are normally very cheap we went to both childrens shows on one day, one from the front row at 9 am and one from up higher at 12:30 as tickets were only £5 each.

Also look out for outdoor performances that you can move on from if DD gets restless.

Thank you so much! This is so incredibly useful- I would’ve never known about the ballet or the Christmas snow show in north Finchley. Had a look at that and found a show we can take her to (for under 2s!)

thank you!!

I’m so glad! I’ve taken DS to the theatre since he was a baby and now he sits through full length stuff no problem

not Christmassy, but the Unicorn Theatre baby show is incredible for your DC’s age.

Greenbks · 29/08/2022 07:44

I will check that out- thank you!!

This will be perfect. I’d skip the ballet this year.

Canyousewcushions · 29/08/2022 21:28

We took ours at that age and she laughed and laughed and laughed. It'll forever be one of my favourite Christmas memories....

However, it probably does depend on the child. Our first was one who would happily sit and watch and absorb things. We subsequently had wrigglers and I wouldn't have taken either of them at that age 🤣

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 30/08/2022 08:25

@Canyousewcushions my favourite theatre memory was when DD was 4. We had front row tickets for Stomp during Kids Week and she got a real proper fit of the giggles and the cast stopped and incorporated it into the show, so they did their beat of the music to match her laugh which made her laugh more, which made the audience laugh it was brilliant.

CookieCoo · 30/08/2022 18:11

An awful idea to take a 16-month old to the theatre. Have you tried a flight with that age? They don’t sit still!!

Greenbks · 30/08/2022 18:22

@CookieCoo we actually have! A 5 hour flight and she was as good as gold. She is a pretty chilled child and loves watching people. Will
sit still and just watch people. So as one of the pps said about taking her baby I might take her!

@Canyousewcushions that is lovely & I wanted to hear if anyone had taken their child- ours is super chilled and I will have a think about it.

@HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime this is amazing! Bet the theatre staff loved it

We went to the morning show and it was full of really young children so a fairy "lively" audience but it was really relaxed as ours was far from the most fidgety child there.

The first half follows the story of the film and it was the dancing cat that proved totally delightful. The second half is more traditional ballet as there's an add-on to the original storyline, but it was a lovely introduction to watching a ballet with her- took her back again the following year before her wriggly siblings made an appearance 😁

SuperGinger · 30/08/2022 19:41

For your own sanity don't worry about going, it might be a classic but we went to the a few years back and I still have nightmares that I'm stuck with a young Alex Jones lookalike singing Walking in the Air, it is so repetitive. In fact I wish I'd never bothered with some of those dreadful productions for very young children. Instead save the cash and treat yourself.
