I thought I might start a thread with some ideas for things people can do (with or without children) that don't cost much/anything and that I loved as a child and now as an adult.

  • Collecting pine cones and spraying them gold/silver
  • Making mince pies/Christmas fairy cakes/ Christmas cake/ anything else at home
  • We buy large packs of blank cards and always spend a very happy afternoon (or two afternoons!) making Christmas cards for friends, teachers etc. We use the same Christmas ink stamps that I used as a child (even the ink pads are still ok!). My children started to really enjoy this when they were about 7 - they liked it when they were younger but it didn't take quite so much time up! Now they're a bit older they love to take time to make/draw a special card for all their significant adults and we listen to Christmas music or an audiobook while we work (I make cards too!).
  • Making paper chains - we stick on a film and start a production line. The children love this and I'm happy for them to decorate their bedrooms with tons of paper chains!
  • Christmas films... We don't have any subscription services but we do have the ability to "record" programmes from the tv onto our box. So I go though the TV listings near Christmas and record any films that I think we might like. I never, and I do mean never, buy films/dvd's etc. There is masses on normal TV and lots of programmes we all now enjoy too!
  • I make a treasure trail for our village with things for the children to tick off - some are specific to our village, some are just random things that I assume we might spot - eg dog being walked, star on top of a tree, person wearing wellies etc. They get a chocolate coin for every item they find!
  • Nativity play/crib service - children always very keen to take part in our village church nativity and/or crib service. It's also something I loved when I was a child - the sense of the whole community coming together working out parts, costumes, lighting, music etc (it was always really very simple - nothing fancy but so lovely).
  • Care home - we normally go and visit a care home we have a connection with and join in with carols/general helping out. If you/your child is involved with brownies/cubs etc - please do consider asking a local care home if they're like you to come and sing carols or something!
  • Homeless bags - we fill spare party bags with things that a homeless person might appreciate - new socks, new toothbrush, pack of sweets, can of coke etc. This was very much led by my oldest child and it's the children who give them out. I have had chats with them about people not always being appreciative etc/feeling really sad, tired etc but so far they have only ever had a good response!
  • I take both my children shopping on their own to choose and buy a present for their sibling. Normally £5-£10 and it's their own pocket money. They really LOVE choosing and wrapping something themselves.
  • Garden centre - our local garden centre has lots of animatronic animals, great displays etc. I am a sucker for a Christmas garden centre trip :-)
  • Instead of a cinema trip with snacks etc that would easily cost £40 including parking, even with cheapish tickets, we have movie nights at home with homemade popcorn, hot chocolate etc. At Christmas we turn off all the lights and just have the tree lights on and we all snuggle under throws. It's so lovely and sometimes we just watch a few episodes of a favourite programme instead. The key for this is no phones etc (which is hard for me!) and feeling like we're all cosy together and enjoying something together.
  • Gingerbread houses, Christmas biscuits and chocolate logs - I often invite a few friends and let the children decorate an Ikea gingerbread house. They love it and they're very cheap to buy. Last year we got a normal chocolate swiss roll from Tesco, melted some chocolate and the children really enjoyed making a chocolate log with insane decorations. (I make a proper buche du noel too another time!). Ditto Christmas biscuits - last year we decorated them as melting snowmen (copied the biscuits we saw in Pret!). Lots of fun.
  • Decorating - we go for a walk about a week before Christmas and cut holly and other green things from friend's gardens (with permission) and then use this to decorate the house. It's free (!), looks and smells lovely and the children love choosing what to cut and using the secateurs.
  • Jigsaws - my idea of heaven. Big Jigsaw to do while the children watch something on tv/play/"help" me with the jigsaw/listen to an audiobook. BLISS.
Ok, that's a Christmas ESSAY!! I hope someone finds some of it vaguely helpful. I think, for me, the focus is on spending time together enjoying quite basic activities but the joy of it really is in being together. We're not The Waltons and we do have plenty of arguments and tantrums just like everyone else.

We don't have a big extended family which is one reason why I like to join forces with other friends with children sometimes to bolster the numbers!

We also do things that are expensive at Christmas but I am cutting back because I know that actually, my children are just as happy playing a long game of monopoly with Pringles and lemonade as they are watching The Nutcracker!

As a child, Christmas was all about feeling safe, cosy and being with my parents. I'm trying my best to make it as simple and lovely as that really.

All other ideas MORE than welcome!

Christmas Film Marathon Xmas Grin

Dusclaimer: There are loads of utterly dire CCF (Cheesey Christmas Films) on TV from Nov onwards - you know the well that's 90 minutes of my life I won't get back , but there are some gems .

Our choices are :
Lost Christmas ( Eddie Izzard film)
Last Christmas (Emma Thompson film)
Christmas episodes of dinnerladies and Still Game (and the New Year /Hogmanay ones)
Love Actually
Angels In The Snow ( proper CCF)
The Snowman ( even though they're adults)
The Dr Who episode with David Morrissey (The Two Doctors)

Cup of hot chocolate and some nice cake -sorted

xogossipgirlxo · 11/08/2022 14:43

I am planning Christmas movies on amazon prime and jigsaw. I think I will buy 2 or 3 chippy Christmas books on amazon (some cheesy stories, but they really cheer me up).

AmberGer · 11/08/2022 14:59

We play prize bingo.
Buy a book of bingo tickets
1 pack of mini highlighters
Download a bingo caller app on phone chocolates or novelty Christmas prizes from Poundland, b&m etc.
Everyone loves it

ODFOx · 11/08/2022 15:05

With older DC/teens we used to night hike and take flasks of soup and hot chocolate.
Or indeed Sunday morning hike and cooked breakfast in flasks.
Getting outdoors with or without food always makes the snuggling in at home more special.
When smaller: blankets tents with fairy lights for indoor camping.
I used to make a tree shaped sponge cake (most of our dc weren't keen on fruitcake) and spread it with green buttercream. We'd have an afternoon making fondant decorations and the dc would decorate the cake with whatever they wanted.

Tree shaped sponge cake? That's genius!

What a lovely thread. The things we like doing are:

Christmas light safari. We put hot chocolate in a thermos, get in the car one evening before Christmas and put Christmas music on then drive around our town looking at all the Christmas lights on people's houses.

Watching Christmas films with popcorn and cuddling under blankets.

Going to our local garden centre to look at the Christmas displays and have a hot chocolate in the cafe.

Making up a bag of donations for some local charities. We have a lovely lady that comes to your house to collect for the local mother and baby shelter so I always do a bag for her at Christmas.

BBQ in the garden. Wrap up warm and have burgers with brie then toast some marshmallows.

I definitely want to make paper chains with the children this year!

Heres an idea I’d like to do this year that is new… I’ve realised that there are lots of very expensive and fancy Christmas high teas available. Well I’m not a bad baker, so I’m going to invite some friends for a Christmas high tea with Christmassy sandwiches (crusts cut off etc), maybe gingerbread biscuits, mince pies, um…. Haven’t quite finalised the menu. Mulled wine probs. But thought it would be lots of fun!

RJnomore1 · 11/08/2022 22:31

You could get Xmas cookie cutters for the sandwiches?

these are great ideas although making a Christmas cake is definitely not cheap. Unless I’m using very much the wrong recipe!

one of our favourites and one the girls continued to love as teens - a family walk into town on Christmas Eve for any last minute bits but we always had to get greggs festive bakes to eat for lunch as we walked home.

buckeejit · 11/08/2022 23:22

Some great ideas! Some others we do are picnics under the Christmas tree & trips to the zoo to wish all the animals a Merry Christmas! And a Christmas clear out. Dc just love it 🙄

Rainydaize · 13/08/2022 19:22

Oh I love these. So many I'm going to steal.
I want to introduce a morning beach breakfast snuggled under blankets with a thermos of tea and throwing stones into the sea. Perhaps not hugely typically Christmassy but more about us spending time as a family.

We do the light safari, and a walk around the village to look at the lights too.

The day of putting up the tree includes love actually and Chinese for dinner.

I love the pine cone idea, we've gone and collected pretty leaves before in the Autumn and painted a tree onto the window sticking the leaves on.

Having the logs delivered and having a line of passing the logs until they have all filled the log store.

I'm trying to think of things to add to an activity advent calendar for this year that are free or low cost, so some of these will definitely go on there!

BlueReindeer · 13/08/2022 19:26

Really lovely thread thanks! Despite the heatwave I’ve started to feel ready for winter/Christmas the last few days….

ThreeRingCircus · 13/08/2022 19:30

Oh yes doing a Christmas afternoon tea sounds amazing!

I'd definitely have to include turkey and cranberry sandwiches (or brie and cranberry for veggies). Plus some heavily-spiced slices of fruit cake. Maybe some mini sausage rolls. And mince pies, obviously.

I think I'm going to steal this idea OP! 🤣

Rainydaize · 13/08/2022 19:33

Ooh I'd missed afternoon tea. Sounds perfect!

Really lovely thread thanks! Despite the heatwave I’ve started to feel ready for winter/Christmas the last few days….

I'm really feeling in the need for the "bers" months to start. There is so much I love about autumn and winter. I think I've got summer fatigue and just done with the heat/scrimping on water/no rain etc
Bring on the next time it rains and I can have a mug of hot tea and a book

Decafflatteplease · 14/08/2022 09:04

Lovely thread!

Like @Rainydaize I also love autumn and winter and feel so much more like "me" then. Hot sticky sweaty summer isn't for me.

Bring on the blankets scarfs and boots! We love all things simple here and always do similar things in December. I have a variety of ages of DC.

Things we like....

Winter walks with a thermos of hot chocolate or sausages (take rolls to make hotdogs)

Making bird feeders and hanging them in our garden

Beach visit wrapped up very well!

Christmas baking eg cranberry sausage rolls, Christmas shaped cookies.

Fire pit in garden and roasting chestnuts on it and toasting pannetone

Various church services we are Christians

Trip into town in the evening to see the lights and tree and have a bag of chips on a bench this is my teens favourite!

Making reindeer food (no glitter!) Ready for Christmas Eve

Making Christmas cards to send to great grandparents my toddler loves this especially posting them in a postbox

Always read "twas the night before Christmas" on Christmas Eve we have the exact same copy I had as a child albeit a bit battered now it's very special

Got all the hygge feels now!

SquirrelSoShiny · 14/08/2022 09:06

Ahhh I love this thread 😊

Ilikecheeseontoast · 14/08/2022 09:09

Love some of the ideas on this thread! Thanks for sharing!

Rainydaize · 14/08/2022 13:54

The children asked for dippy eggs and soldiers for breakfast this morning, always makes me feel like autumn not sure why!

Beetr00t · 14/08/2022 15:53

I love this thread, I am definitely going to plan a Christmas High Tea for our friends! I now need a cake stand or two!

Greenstar22 · 14/08/2022 17:26

We do a 1st December box. In it are the advent calanders, christmas books, dvds, pyjamas, jumpers and any other christmas bits. I usually add something new every year maybe a jigsaw this year. Dc look forward to it and it means they use their christmas things for the whole month.

user58486267489 · 14/08/2022 21:28

@Decafflatteplease I also have my childhood edition of The Night Before Christmas!

Please may I ask a very silly question. If I cook sausages, I can put them in a thermos to keep warm?! Why didn’t I think of that!! For how long?!

@BiddyPop what does “word mining” mean? Thanks

Oh, DH and I also try to do a Christmas drinks evening just for the two of us - nice music, nibbles, tree lights and just sit and chat. As cheap/cheerful as you want to make it, but prep and clear up should be minimal. It started when we wanted to go to the pub but all our local ones were packed out with work Christmas parties, and actually this is much nicer!

Me and DH do this aswell - (a late) Dinner on Christmas Eve just the 2 of us -the calm before the storm!!
Sometimes look forward to this more than Christmas Day!
