Oodie type warm indoor clothing for elderly lady

My 85 yo DAunt has decided she won’t be turning the heating on much this winter with the cost of fuel bills. We are addressing this with her as a separate issue, but I wondered if anyone had seen an Oodie-type warm zip-up or button garment that would be similarly warm please? Or would a super thick and fluffy long dressing gown be just as good?

While she is fit and healthy and can easily pull clothing over her head I just envision these Oodie style garments might be a bit cumbersome for her.

i have crocheted some blankets and we wrap ourselves in those when sitting on the settee. Would that work as a gift?

BlackbirdsSinging · 09/08/2022 15:40

It’s very easy - I learnt off YouTube.

A fleecy housecoat, my nan always wore won in winter?

AdamantEve · 09/08/2022 15:46

They have zip up versions at online home shop - I’ve ordered from there and everything I’ve received has been good although don’t have a zip up oodie so can’t give a personal recommendation. I’ve linked here to an example of what they have though

We’re in the same boat with my elderly in-laws planning on keeping their heating off this winter.

The Oodies are absolutely enormous - I'm a plus size and it still drowns me. Comfy AF though and definitely very warm. I use it in winter for WFH.

Ugg type boots are a godsend. Thick rugs underfoot in colder rooms.

Would she tolerate plugging in electric blankets - underblanket for the bed, over blanket for the living room? They cost comparative peanuts to run and would be much cheaper than oil filled radiators etc. You could work out the cost to run them before they are bought.

Also, if she has a gas boiler, gas is still much cheaper than electricity per kWh. Maybe work out if she can have the heating on at least a few hours a day if you know what it will cost and convince her to use it? It's worth knowing what she's up against so you can help her budget (and I can't believe we're all discussing this so casually for a lady of her age. It's just awful).

My elderly grandmother had one of these as a sort of house-coat type thing. Warm but not in the way, and could be thrown on over whatever she was wearing that day.

Thanks, they look lovely.

I have RA and have joint issues in virtually every bilateral joint except my hips, where I have post herpetic neuralgia. The Oodie is absolutely wonderful, and the loose fit makes it so easy to get on and off. I can't recommend them enough. Soft, comfortable, warm and no inner seams to itch. Virtually indestructible, and wash really well, although the inner fleece loses its plush look, I suppose. I have two of the original ones, but a lot of people seem really happy with the knockoffs.

Damart thermal clothing range - from underwear to outerwear via jumpers and trousers.

Thanks everyone for your ideas which I’m looking into.

I have already ordered the Sienna one, thanks @AdamantEve & @Becky6758 so if I like them I’ll get one for me too!

I do like the Sienna one in grey but being 5 ft 4 and 8,5 stone I think it would annoy me. The sleeves look huge! Anyone tried the kids version? I do like the open ones as if I need to answer the door I can just slip off.

StridTheKiller · 27/09/2022 07:00

We just got a Kuddly for our 86 year old frasil but very ladylike and proper neighbour as she really feels the cold. I pre empted our gift by warning her they ard utterly hideous but SO SO warm! I just wish i could buy them for all the eldefly, ill, disabled and vulnerable.

Of all the loungewear I own (and there's a LOT) this is my absolute favourite. I bought one for my mum too. Warm, soft, washes well, lightweight and goes over everything. Shorter and easier to wear than a dressing gown and looks smarter.

DM 82 swears by the Uniqlo ultralight down gilets. So light you don't notice them indoors or under a coat. They don't restrict movement at all so you don't feel like you are wearing a jacket indoors IYSWIM. Primark do an ok dupe that is cheaper.

Their Heat tech thermal underwear is fantastic too. They are designed so that they can be worn as outerwear too, they don't look like underwear and they come as polo necks, camisoles, t-shirts and long sleeved tops in all kinds of colours and patterns. They also do Heat tech outerwear that is just outerwear eg joggers, leggings, tops, fleecees, tights etc.

I've seen some heated poncho things on Amazon today, they have several different types.

NevieSticks · 28/09/2022 09:51

A heated overblanket is just the best thing ever.
