Currently making my way through Nigel Slaters Christmas chronicles and listening to "As the seasons turn". Can anyone recommend other similar books please? 😀

Is it worth investing in? I'm glad someone else is thinking about Christmas early 😄

Chickpea curry too!

I love the gentle nostalgic fiction of Christmas with Miss Read (includes multiple stories, I especially like No Holly for Miss Quinn); and the amusing An Almost Perfect Christmas by Nina Stibbe.

I would definitely recommend The Christmas Chronicles. If you order the Audible version, you also get a PDF copy of the accompanying recipes too.

@LaTangerina

The Christmas Chronicles is wonderful (if you like Nigel’s writing).

Well worth the money at full price IMO and you could probably get it for a great deal right now on eBay/amazon or in bookstores - it goes up to full price (or more, in some cases) every year in about November time. I know that WHS had it for £9 for a while last year. I think it was £17 on amazon and around £12 on eBay when people were looking last year.

Beautiful book with beautiful photographs, written as a journal with lots of memories and musings on nature/winter/Christmas, interspersed with food, drink and recipes. It’s

Last year we had a read-along here on MN which was very enjoyable and I hope will be repeated this year - some of us tried the recipes in it as we went along, too. Lots of happy, cosy, gentle Christmas chat. The journal starts on Nov 1st so it takes you through the beginnings of winter and right through to Christmas. I find it a really nice way of enjoying some daily hygge in the lead up to the big day, and for those who are busy it’s nice to have a reason to carve out the time to sit down with a cup of tea or a glass of something nice and take some time to breathe and relax.

Sorry @LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana other than the above, which you already have, I don’t have anything to recommend, other than Christmas recipe books - I really like reading those as I love food, cooking and Christmas. The well written ones usually have lots of themes that I appreciate, such as home, family, memories, and traditions.

I read Mr Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva rather out of season last month. It’s pure froth but quite enjoyable!

Thank you so much, I've bought it now second hand & I'll look out for the thread early November!

Merry Midwinter by Gillian Monks is enjoyable

NameChangeyForThis · 26/08/2022 20:55

I'm waiting to see if I can get Nigel's Christmas Chronicles on offer in the run up to Christmas. I'd like to give it to people as gifts this year. All wrapped up in crisp brown paper and a nice tie or ribbon.

NiqueNique · 26/08/2022 21:25

@NameChangeyForThis I don’t think you’ll find it on offer in the lead-up to Christmas, as in my experience from the past couple of years it usually goes back up to full price of £20 (or higher). You might be better off looking for bargains now - amazon has it for £12-13 atm.

NiqueNique · 26/08/2022 21:26

Meant to say you can often find it for a bit less on eBay with the bigger book sellers.
