How could I restore this Christmas tree to some kind of glory?

My Grandma had the same Christmas tree for 80 years and for my entire childhood, arriving at her house on the last day of term and seeing it in the window was the beginning of Christmas. She never took the decorations off it, simply added more and more tinsel as it became threadbare and then covered it in a pillowcase for 11 months of the year. We always joked we would gladly chuck it out when the time came as it ended up so sorry for itself, covered in garish tinsel and a sorry sight. Then when she moved into a home permanently, I found it in its hiding place in the garage, carefully covered in a pillowcase and I just couldn't throw it in the skip.

Last night I read through some of her diaries (she left them to me) and she talks every year about the pleasure the tree gave her. It was her mother's and she was given it when she got married. I have decided to be brave and take off all the tinsel and see what's left of the original tree. It really is a mess but you can see that it once used to have foliage on its wire branches.

So, any ideas? I don't know whether to find a way to add more branches or just try and restore the ones that are there. I need to somehow add foliage to them but am not sure where to start. I have my Grandma's angel, vintage lights and some decorations and they will go back on but I need a tree-like canvas for them.

I know it's a mess. I do. Grandma died two years ago and my love of Christmas comes from her. So many of my happy memories are bound up with her presence and this sad little tree was such a part of it.

Could you put real foliage on (change it every year).

How are you getting on with the tree @ShowOfHands I think it's a lovely thing to do, my grandma made my DCs a special Christmas santa using an old clear plastic sweet tub and alot of cotton wool, and red coloured felt, it's years old now and she died recently, I'm trying to restore it to how she made it! So just re adding the wool for his beard and hat. 💕

That sounds wonderful @Misspacorabanne I'm so sorry you too lost your grandma. Sadly, my maternal Grandma also died only very recently and whilst staying at her house a few days ago, I uncovered her Christmas decorations in the back of a cupboard. I can't quite look at them yet but they're in my care.

I've got a Nativity set knitted by my paternal Grandma and every now and then, I have to repair a crook or reinforce a donkey's gammy leg. I like to think that it's just an awful lot of love being added to the original gesture.

I've been trying out things with the tree recently and it's in our garden room while I do so. I've attached a pic of how it looks right now. I've added fake foliage and poinsettias I had knocking around. I've got some burnt orange velvet fabric on its way to wrap the base. I'll keep experimenting. I've got until Christmas when I'm hosting and plan to use the decorations from both Grandmothers to honour my first year with both of them no longer here 💔

Lovely thread OP, beautiful to read.

You’ve done an amazing job with the tree, it’s wonderful!!

ChewOnAPickle · 12/06/2022 08:07

Glad you were able to do something with it. It looks a million times better and can now live on for many more years.

What a beautiful thread. I so agree with you, Showy - our family Christmases growing up were so special, generations of family and grandparents on all sides (and in-law DGPs too). My paternal grandparents had a similar approach to threadbare trees - and they were beautiful. My maternal grandmother always had the same white articulate tree, with cotton wool ‘snow’. Also beautiful.

Your grandparents tree looks amazing. Your love (reflecting their love) shines in it.

The tree looks great, what lovely memories you have of your grandmother

MintyMoocow · 12/06/2022 08:29

I would put lights and baubles on it as it is and have it as a second tree, a conversation piece.

ShowOfHands · 17/12/2024 18:47

I've just taken the pillow case off the tree. Christmas is definitely here.

I'm hosting again this year and Grandma's tree has pride of place in the kitchen. I just need to add lights and the festive season is officially, open.

Merry Christmas Mumsnet.
