We don't go to church that often but make a concerted effort to go at Christmas so the 'true' meaning of the season isn't lost.

DD really wants to go to midnight mass, haven't been since she was 6 and she fell asleep in the pew!

Yes/No? I really can't decide whether it would be a good idea to take her or not.

I won't be going on my own if she doesn't go (I'm petrified of driving in the dark on my own!)

If she'd liketo go and you are happy to go with her, then go.

bossybaublesinherbritches · 24/12/2007 08:17

I think it's lovely she wants to go- I always enjoy midnight mass it IS very special & could be the start of a new tradition for you now she is older!!

The bonus is you get a BIT of a lie-in on Christmas day as they are (usually)well knackered!!

Cappuccino · 24/12/2007 08:20

yes of course you should

WatsIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 24/12/2007 08:24

Midnight mass here is on at 6pm !!! I kid you not!! They had to bring it right forward cos of the amount of drunks, how depressing

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 24/12/2007 08:24

If she wants to and you're not anti-church then why not?

lyra41 · 24/12/2007 08:30

Is there not an earlier service you could go to? We go to the Christingle service at 4.30pm. Enjoy whatever you do. Happy Christmas

yogimum · 24/12/2007 08:40

We are going to the childrens crib service at 4.30pm.

wangle99 · 24/12/2007 08:52

There aren't any earlier services unfortunately, we missed the Christingle the other week .

I wasn't sure whether it was frowned upon and people would think 'why on earth bring a child that age to a service this time of night'.

Think we will go then...

I would go, we are going to church this evening at 6pm which is a family service, children are also welcome at midnight mass, which is actually at 10pm.

BadKittenInAPearTree · 24/12/2007 09:25

Awwww she will love it - it will feel very special and grown-up for her.

TheChristmasFaggot · 24/12/2007 09:32

Take her! Midnight Mass is lovely.

We're doing the Crib Service this afternoon but my DCs are only aged 3, 4 & 6 so no Midnight Mass for us for awhile.

DrNortherner · 24/12/2007 09:36

Actually, sorry to disagree, but I do think midnight mass is not suitable for kids. It is too late and it's an adult service imo.

Sorry.

kerryk · 24/12/2007 10:02

i was always taken to midnight mass when i was younger, possibly from about age 5-6.

we were hoping to take the dd's for the first time this year (6&3) but we have such a early start tomorrow that it would not be fair on them.

midnight mass is really special and its lovely your dd has said she would like to go.

Alambil · 24/12/2007 10:04

DS has been going to MM since he was born; I love the late-night celebrations.

She is old enough to behave like an adult (ie stay quiet when needed).

I rekon you should go

wangle99 · 24/12/2007 10:37

Any particular reason DrN that you think its not suitable? The service they follow (Church of England) is identical to a Sunday mass (apart from carols and readings).

DD is very mature for her age and would not be noisy at all.

I think Midnight Mass is a lovely service for children.
I used to go from the age of about 8.
It's really exciting to know that it is Christmas Day when you come out of church.

mamhaf · 24/12/2007 14:44

Go, go, go.

We've taken dds (now 15 and 11) for the past few years, and there's usually a handful of children there - some quite young.

I really don't agree with DrN - imo every church service is suitable for children...there won't be a church in the future if we don't take our children.

It's such a lovely start to Christmas, with the bonus of not having to drag everyone away from their presents to attend on Christmas morning, which is what we did when they were very litte.
