Yes they are doing it for a good cause ,it's christmas blah blah blah.

But they just hinder me when i am trying to pack.

If i wanted my bread squashed and my tins dented i would just leave dd2 to pack for me.

If I'm feeling weak, I give them a pound not to do it. If I'm feeling strong, I give them a lesson in packing - "all the fridgey things go together, all the heavy things together, the potatoes go in before the salad, etc" and a pound as well.

OMG, so, is that why they don't help you pack unless you say so? When we moved here from America it got on my nerves that the cashier wouldn't do anything while I frantically tried to pack and find my wallet and pay... while the queue built up. Now I see... no squashed bread! (having 'ah-ha!' moment.)

Lmao I just posted on another thread about this!
I had a 16 year old army cadet squash a huge fresh cream cake under my enormous bottle of gin! I paid him to stop and someone got me a new cake(which was lucky as they were selling like they were hot!)

I find it extraordinary that these kids don't know how to pack a supermarket shop anyway! My mum taught me how to do it as soon as I was big enough to be any help.

Lilymaid · 23/12/2007 21:55

I donate 50 p and do my own packing, though I have asked them to put stuff on to the belt whilst I pack it afterwards. DS had to do bag packing last year to raise money for a rugby tour and for World Challenge and found it very hard work - so I do sympathise with them as well as with all the people who get their bananas squashed under potatoes etc.

Bouncingturtlewithtinsel · 23/12/2007 22:06

I always asked them politely NOT to pack, as I always bring my own bags and am quite anal about making sure everything goes in the right bags. But I'll quite happily donate to the cause.
I do find it annoying, but I just don't show because I know they mean well.

MaureenMLovesmincepies · 23/12/2007 22:09

I find if you speak to these youngsters and ask them to be careful how they put things in your shoppng bags that are very accommodating! I usually say something alone the lines of, 'thanks, you do the tins and I'll do the soft stuff!'

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 23/12/2007 22:10

A lot of supermarket cashiers don't know how to pack properly either and as for the home deliveries from Tescos!! They put a max of 2 items in a bag, I swear.

I'd rather carry 2 well-packed bags home than 10 half-empty ones flapping around me with one packet of butter in and a celery stick . Fortunately I must either appear too poor or too healthy to be asked if I need help . I'll donate a £1 to most worthy causes.

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 23/12/2007 22:11

Yup, I donate money for them NOT to pack my bags. They always seem to be quite delighted to get money for doing nothing, I get the impression they are only doing because Head Scout says they have to. So chuck 'em and quid and make the poor little sods smile.

galaxymummy · 23/12/2007 22:17

Dear Lilymaid,
ds wants to go on rugby tour next year, he is very polite and well trained by me !thinking of asking supermarket manager to bag pack opportunity next xmas. how can he encourage shoppers and not p... people off. he is shy giant really and we do not have enough money to send him?
any other mumnetters got any good fundraing ideas for rugby mad teenager

SteadyNeddy · 23/12/2007 22:27

I usually put a pound in the bucket and say I'll pack the shopping myself. They either make the most of the break or go and help their friend who's packing at the next till.

Quattrocento · 23/12/2007 22:33

Just sort in advance for them ... stand in front of them then send things whizzing past that actually go together in the same bag ... tell them to use your bags too ... I like them
