Do you use serving dishes for your Christmas dinner?

& if you do, where are they from?

I've decided I'd like everything on the table to help ourselves next year so am on the hunt for some, reasonably inexpensive, serving dishes.

It might only be the once it ever happens but I like the idea 🤷‍♀️

We have a proper dinner service with bowels & tureens etc but chose a simple white with a platinum band so we can add to it easily with our simple white everyday china/cookware.

I don' think it's worth buying stuff to only use at christmas - what stuff do you use everyday? Where did it come from? Can you just add something similar to it? What do you cook lasagne in? Or casseroles etc? Can these be changed to something more complimentary to your crockery that can also be used on the table?

I always use serving dishes. Years ago I used to buy Christmas ones but not I just stick with plain white so I can use them all year round. Most of mine are from wilko and Iv had them quite a few years and they are still perfect, even though they are used often. I also have a few choice Christmas pieces from Emma bridgewater/ Disney store/ M&S which I use for the turkey or for Christmas afternoon tea.a

We use serving dishes for most of our meals. They’re from a range of places, tbh. Some we got as wedding presents over 20yrs ago Grin, some have been presents for christmases or birthdays and some we’ve bought along the way. Most are white porcelain or stoneware. Some of it is fancier brands, some is from holidays or trips away and some is from the supermarket if we’ve spotted the perfect size or shape when out. Honestly, it’s a right mish mash but because it’s mostly white, it works. For me, it’s more about the right shape and size than the brand.

TK Maxx is good for nice serving dishes. I got some round, lidded le Creuset ones from there and were under £20. I think lidded is best to keep the food warm.

Emma Bridgewater because it is my pride and joy

actiongirl1978 · 01/01/2022 17:40

Try txmaxx.

I have a mix of white ones and Christmas ones which I bought years ago from house of fraser they had a lovely range that they used to refresh each year.

I got one lovely blue & white serving dish in TK Maxx a few years ago, and a really nice one from a car boot sale. I'm fond of vintage china and my meat serving plate is willow pattern and donkeys years old. Another car boot find. I always serve mince pies on a pretty Spode plate, it was the first present MIL ever bought me.

We don't go for matching stuff really.

I have a mix of plain white ones from
John Lewis, The Range, and Ikea.
M&S had nice plain white ones before Christmas.

GhostofChristmasCheer · 01/01/2022 17:52

We have Sophie Conrad ones, white sort of swirly things. They quite often appear in TK Maxx and probably on sale at the moment in John Lewis, etc.

jendifer · 01/01/2022 17:52

What do you do if you don’t use serving dishes? Is it the pans on the table or something else? Just thinking you might need a trivet or big board if you aren’t currently putting hot stuff on the table

Ours are a mixture, the ones I like best were sainsburys/habitat but we have some from Lakeland too.

GhostofChristmasCheer · 01/01/2022 17:53

Sainsbury’s also did a knock off version of them for a while which was handy. Not sure if they still do but I quite like their homeware offerings.

GhostofChristmasCheer · 01/01/2022 17:53

That should have said Sophie Conran, not Conrad, I got autocorrected.

Giggorata · 01/01/2022 17:54

If it's just DH and me, I don't always bother, but if we have family or other guests, then I do.
I'm not a fan of white and my kitchen is green with yellow, so I have a mishmash of dark green lidded tureens and dishes I bought from a long closed House of Fraser store, some dark green le Creuset and some Rayware Olivio, which is mainly yellow.

HunterGatherer · 01/01/2022 18:05

We do most days but at Christmas it's too much of a faff so we just serve it up.
Our dinner service is from Doulton, a wedding gift. Love it as much today as I did 25 years ago. It's white with a simple blue and gold band.

yellowjellytot · 01/01/2022 18:09

I've found some great serving dishes in charity shops. Smile

I always serve buffet style but use those silver foil platters for easy clearing!

kitcat15 · 01/01/2022 18:38

Never use serving dishes...ever

flippertyop · 01/01/2022 19:03

I use the M&S star and tree shaped ones

What disposable ones? Is that just at Christmas time or every main meal?
Reallybadidea · 01/01/2022 19:25

We generally put food on the table throughout the year, but at Christmas it is absolutely impossible to fit all the dishes on! We serve up buffet-style from the kitchen island, with one of those heated serving things (can't think of the word!) that takes multiple dishes, to keep it all warm. Condiments and drinks only on the table itself.

Pegasussnail · 01/01/2022 19:27

I have loads but never use them !
Buy I have beautiful pieces from tk maxx

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 01/01/2022 19:29

Day to day we have red plates. Got a 16 piece tartan set to mix in at Christmas.. And extra tartan pasta bowls for roasties and the parsnips! Some Xmas tree shaped ones from Matalan and a snowman one!! And white larger serving dishes from Asda.

A580Hojas · 01/01/2022 19:36

We only use serving dishes on special occasions/dinner parties/having family round. For day to day family meals everything gets put on plates before being taken to the table . Except stuffing, when we're having a roast, for some reason that goes on the table in the pyrex cooking dish for people to help themselves to.

We have a right old mish mash of dishes acquired over the years. Couldn't give a stuff about matching or having a theme.

LadyLazarus40 · 01/01/2022 19:37

I use serving dishes every day - an assortment of various bits of China, Denby and enamel things.

onedayoranother · 01/01/2022 21:01

When I sold my last house I treated myself to Christmas china - Sophie Conrad's Mistletoe from Portmeirion. It's not cheap though - nice stuff rarely is.
