Tips for organising Christmas decorations

We are just about to start work on our loft room to make it bigger (currently a junk room) and it will become a bedroom so we will have a limited amount of storage. All decorations will be going into storage for a few months so when they return I will have a really good opportunity to organise and sort everything.

So, really any tips on doing this and making it easier for next year as well as reducing storage space?

So far I've got:

  • Numbering boxes with the things you use first placed together and then put at the front (outside lights, cards christmas jumpers, books, elf on the shelf etc)
  • Sorting through and getting rid of things not used, broken, needing replacement
  • making a list on phone of what needs to be picked up early next year, things to be replaced (2 sets of lights for me)
  • buying things like hangers, command hooks and putting them with the decorations

Anything else? Has anyone used the bauble boxes I've seen? Are they good or too flimsy? Any good ways of storing delicate decorations? Reducing storage space? What about wrapping storage, bows, gift tags etc...

I so want to be organised for next year and getting the decs down be a joy rather than hunting for things and having my loft room over taken by boxes and things strewn about in December.

We have low cupboards built into the eaves of our attic room and store decs there. From the room side they are just doors ifyswim.

One thing I do have is a toolbox, with the lift out trays. It contains gift ribbon, gift cards, Christmas cards, scissors, stampers etc. Makes gift wrapping much easier.

I also pack really carefully when I take the decs down - so all the tree decs on one box, outdoor lights in another.

Was thinking about this myself as we are hoping to move next year. We have a few large indoor light up decs and have the boxes in the loft. I have started taking down some of the ornaments and have wrapped in bubble wrap even though the boxes are there. Decided to recycle the boxes as this would take up a lot more storage space if packed back in them.
I usually pack everything from each tree, baubles beads, lights etc and keep in a box ready to go back on tree next year. I find the clear plastic storage boxes ideal for this.

We use my partners old tools organiser. Our baubles fit perfectly in each compartment. They can connect to each other when stacking which works great.
We use really useful storage tubs. We can see what's in them that way. We brought the tree box just for wrapping paper.

We have a box labelled 1st December for everything that needs to come out then. All tree baubles go in 1 big box, but they are all plastic. Garlands go together in another box. Christmas jumpers all washed and dried go in a large zipped bag, ready to be taken down and washed and dried again last week of November. Every box is labelled on the front with what's in it. I have a wrapping storage bag with plenty of space for rolls, then compartments for ribbons, tags, pens, scissors etc. I also have a very sturdy sellotape dispenser that makes wrapping a hundred times easier.

Cardboard boxes are good for storing things.

I have two cardboard decorations boxes for tree decorations - store the tinsel in the bottom of one of them. So far they are quite robust. Then large plastic clear ikea boxes with lids for everything else. You can see what’s inside so no need to label.
