Leftover turkey- Have I just given myself food poisoning?!

DH has been unwell after the covid booster so as a snack I thought I’d use up some leftover turkey.

Saw a recipe for a toasted turkey sandwich. Cold turkey and cheese, butter the outside of the bread and pan fry. Sounded lovely.

Bread was lightly toasted, cheese just a bit melty and turkey was warm.

It’s just occurred to me that you should reheat meat until piping hot. Do you think this will cause food poisoning?

I had a very bad experience with a chilled cauliflower cheese I’ve never really gotten over so I’m a bit on edge. Please either pre warn me or put my mind at rest!

You will be absolutely fine!

Turkey from yesterday, stored in the fridge until now?
My dc are eating some cold in olivye salad just now.
I don't think bacteria will grow to significant levels in the length of time it takes to make and eat a toastie

Toasted turkey and stuffing sandwiches have been a staple boxing day tea in my house for at least 30 years and not had a case of food poisoning from it yet.....

INeedNewShoes · 26/12/2021 20:34

You'll be fine!

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/12/2021 20:34

It’ll be fine.

SpiderFluff · 26/12/2021 20:35

I think you'll be OK as long as it was eaten quickly after being warmed.

Bagelsandbrie · 26/12/2021 20:37

It will be fine. I used to work on a sandwich bar - graded 5* hygiene- and we used to make toasted Turkey sandwiches just like this with left overs from the carvery!

dementedpixie · 26/12/2021 20:37

You can eat turkey cold so I don't see the issue

MrsLeclerc · 26/12/2021 20:37

Thank you!

Yes turkey cooked yesterday and in the fridge until now.

I’ve been ill for 3 months with a sinus issue, had booster side effects the last few days and AF arrived so I think I’m feeling a bit fragile Blush. The thought of something else making me feel worse was too much!

Just a tip for next time you are making a toasties, if you grill the inside first then the outsides you will be sure of melted cheese.

@MrsLeclerc

It sounds delicious...I would say it should be just fine...many food poisoning cases here in the US are caused by contaminated fruits and vegetables , as you found with your cauliflower incident...lettuce from restaurants is a big offender, too...salmonella grows in peanut butter, also...I've just gotten over a bout of salmonella food poisoning...raspberries can be contaminated, too. Foods you'd never suspect

Redsquirrel5 · 26/12/2021 21:18

We’ve always called those ‘inside out sandwiches’ try Brie and cranberry, cheddar, salami and tomato, cheese and pickle.

You’ll be fine.

Yes we do that too.

I then put the sandwich together and use a potato masher to press the sandwich together and then toast on each side! Works brilliantly.

SpiderFluff · 26/12/2021 21:47

@Bagelsandbrie I now want a toasted bagel with brie
