M&S turkey crown on the bone

Am I going bonkers. I've cooked more turkey Xmas dinners than I care to remember, whole bird and crowns, always with a good result if I say so myself.

I'm just looking at the cooking instructions for the M&S 1.5kg turkey crown and it states cook for 1hour & 26 minutes at:

Electric 170C
Fan 140C
Gas 3

Like most people with an electric oven I have a fan oven - 140C is surely too low to cook turkey? I know fan temperatures are about 20C below electric.

I would normally roast any meat at 170C, fan oven.

Am I having a senior moment? Grin

Watching as I have an M&S Turkey crown that I'm picking up this afternoon! I also would cook higher.

Cosmosgrowinmygarden · 24/12/2021 12:52

I think that’s a misprint OP. I would cook it at 160 fan myself - that’s what I always cook a roast at. Hope it’s delicious 😋

I have a waitrose crown and these are the instructions in case this helps.

140 seems very low! I’d normally roast meat at 175 in our fan oven. Better a bit overdone than raw if that’s the choice on Christmas Day!

Fan 170?

PickAChew · 24/12/2021 13:34

It would never cook in 90minutes at that temperature.

This is mine, a little larger and stuffed but the numbers look more realistic

Have you tried scanning the QR code on it?

This is ours from M&S and like previous post these temperatures look more realistic.

We have a 1.4kg M&S Turkey Breast.

The cooking instructions are 180c in the oven, and 160c, which are a bit better, but still about 10c low on each type

Westfacing · 24/12/2021 13:45

Yes, the scan says 160C, which is more like it.

As an experienced cook I knew that 140C was too low but thought I would check with others, in case I was missing something!

This is for a large Morrisons Turkey crown.

Gosh they could cause lots of food poisoning with that advice! 140 very low

ThisIsStartingToBoreMe · 24/12/2021 13:59

OP you say "crown on the bone".

Meat with bones in cooks quicker so your instructions may well be right. The other instructions people have posted might not have bones in hence the difference in temperature instructions

Pangolin44 · 24/12/2021 13:59

Turkey needs an interior temperature of 70°C when icooked, as the crown has no fat I'd actually follow the M&S instructions, how heavy is it and what are the dimensions?

I think you're risking dry meat at a higher temperature for a longer time. Do you have a probe meat thermometer?

Oh dear M&S are in for a roasting come boxing day!!
Pangolin44 · 24/12/2021 14:03

As an aside, with most joints, after an initial blast to brown and crisp the outside I'd usually turn down to about 150°C (not a fan oven). It's a perfectly safe temperature to cook meat at.

Pangolin44 · 24/12/2021 14:08

I also smoke meat on an offset smoker at about 120°C, that's a high enough temperature to cook chicken through (it takes a long time at such a low temperature obviously!).

PlinkPlankPlunk · 24/12/2021 14:30

Eek - we also have a crown on the bone with these same instructions - it’s 2.25kg with a cooking time of 1hr 49mins at 140 fan. I’ve mentioned it to my husband and we are in a quandary as he would normally cook it for less time than it says anyway top keep it moist. But less time and not very hot doesn’t sound good!

I’ll check out the QR code

A crown is on the bone. The instructions I posted were for a crown on the bone.

140 fan is the sort of temperature you'd use for a piece of belly pork or lamb shoulder and would be something like 3 hours cooking time. It's very much a low and slow temperature.
