Christmas, one of the biggest festivals, although Christmas is a festival of Christian society but is celebrated by people of all religions simultaneously all over the world. On Christmas Day, we decorate our houses, send Christmas wishes to our loved ones, and have a lot of fun, but in the midst of all this, are we forgetting the reasons for celebrating Christmas? Are we telling our children the history of Christmas? Or as a student, are we trying to know why we celebrate Christmas? Or why Christmas is celebrated only on 25th December? Let us know the answer to all these questions, let’s start with the question that what is Christmas for Kids…

What is Christmas for Kids

Christmas we all love it everyone waits patiently for the month of December to come around so we can start thinking about what gifts were going to get, where we're going to go shopping for our friends and family, and what ornaments and trimmings will be hanging from the tree. Everyone feels festive singing Christmas carols out in the cold crisp weather unless you live in California or Florida or somewhere like that, in which case you can Carol in your shorts. The Christmas season also serves up all kinds of tasty snacks and treats and provides lots of parties to go to. Then there are the Christmas lights and all the cool decorations and maybe most importantly there's Christmas vacation no school for a week, but aside from all the trappings of the holiday season what exactly is Christmas? I mean why are we doing all the celebrations? Does it have something to do with Santa Claus, the reindeer? why does it happen in December? How did all of this start?

What is Christmas and why it is celebrated?

To understand Christmas the first step is to understand the word itself. The literal meaning of Christmas is mass on Christ's day, mass referring to people gathering together as in a massive people and Christ's Day referring to the day that Jesus was born. That's right at its core Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ also known as the Messiah, the Savior, the Son of God, and many other names. It is commonly accepted that Jesus Christ was born on December 25th, which is why we celebrate on that day. Though the exact date of his birth is not known for sure for people who were Christians Christmas is a very holy day and a religious celebration but for others, Christmas is celebrated in a more secular or non-religious way no matter how you commemorate Christmas. It's one of the most popular holidays in the world, a day when millions of people catch up with family take time off from work or school, and exchange gifts and well wishes.

Erm...thank you? Confused

Shedmistress · 22/12/2021 16:52

Wasn't it stolen from the druids? Nothing to do with Jesus Christ, who was born rather later in the year?

Does it even snow in Bethlehem?

PeaceLilian · 22/12/2021 16:52

What is the purpose of your post @manixx0011?

WouldIBeATwat · 22/12/2021 16:54

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It existed long before the Christians stole it. It was a pagan festival celebrating the winter solstice (21st Dec). The early Christians were trying to convert people by any means possible and decided they would steal the festival and move it by a few days as if that would make it better.

If Jesus was a real person, he was more likely born in September, brown-skinned and unable to turn water into wine.

25th December was actually chosen because it was 9 months before the festival of the annunciation of Mary/ Jesus conception, rather than because it fell on a different festival. Other festivals do coexist around that time, such as Yule, the solstice etc; but the date wasn't chosen to co-opt the pagan festivals. Its a common misconception that it was an intentional act to take over other traditions.

WouldIBeATwat · 22/12/2021 17:08

9 months before?

WouldIBeATwat · 22/12/2021 17:09

Where is your evidence for that, please?

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 22/12/2021 17:09

Thanks op Grin

Actually it's much more basic than the story of jesus birth, as beautiful as it is.
It's just buoyant positive human nature going back through the ages, trying to keep going through the darkest times.

Confused

Ok then

DinosaurOfFire · 22/12/2021 17:36

@WouldIBeATwat

9 months before?
9 months after the annunciation, apologies! The annunciation is the 25th March. Its part of the Orthodox Christian tradition. In terms of evidence I would have to go digging around and unfortunately don't have the time to do so- This is a blog post by an Orthodox Priest about Christmas but there are other sources available, just this is the one I have handy at the moment! blogs.ancientfaith.com/asd/2018/12/05/no-christmas-is-not-pagan-just-stop/?fbclid=IwAR3h6VJzc0rrR5wCyeav8HlZ8jw7ho_BBiBoAWP7FqwZlapvneHpfiIshbk

This in spades. Humans in the bleak midwinter found an excellent excuse to parrrtay and enjoy. Religion tried to stomp all over and spoil the fun as usual.
mam0918 · 22/12/2021 18:19

why Christmas is celebrated only on 25th December?

Erm, it's not even in Christianity... if fact many cultures celebrate on the 24th December or 5th/6th of January.

and called Hey-zeus by friends and family.

Honestly why do we still say Gee-sus when we know that pronunciation is wrong, it speaks to our arrogance that we assumed a middle eastern man had a name that was phonically Anglican lol.

Cheers hun xx

Holothane · 22/12/2021 18:33

I don’t need a sermon thank you op, but have you forgotten the Romans and Druids, Saxons had winter festival as well as the Vikings. The Christian church took it over in the 5 century.
