If I bought meat today, can it really still be ok to eat on Saturday??

Feeling a bit concerned about this and wondering if I should cook the meat the day before and then reheat it. Ideally I'd prefer not to.

I had a tesco shop due to arrive on the 23rd between 20.00 and 22.00, felt organised, but I was looking at it earlier and the stuffed chicken joints I'd ordered were now showing up as ''this product is no longer available''.

So I bought meat in lidl on my way home. It looks fine, the ham is good til January but the turkey goes off 27th December.

How can it be ok for 6 days? It's in a fridge but should I freeze it?

Do you think they add another day on to the end of the best before dates at Christmas?

I bought a fresh turkey crown yesterday. Dated 26th. I have to keep telling DH not to put it in the freezer! It's packaged well and sealed up. We'd only have to take it out again to defrost it anyway!
I’ve read so many comments from people online here and there saying they’re freezing their fresh turkeys with dates of the 26th on them… what’s the point of buying a fresh one to freeze it? 😆 People are crazy. Grin

Re the suggestions to freeze it, I think there’s probably more chance of food poisoning if you start messing around freezing a fresh Turkey at this stage. It’s hard to defrost such a big putrifying corpse properly and you’d be needing to take it out the freezer probably before it had the chance to freeze properly.

You know that all "good" meat is hung for several days, or longer, before it's sold, right.

Are you sure it's saying that it's not in your shop? I went to amend my order and I panicked because when I was going through the list it said that too, but when I did check out it came up as I just couldn't increase the amount I had already ordered.

I just had a goose delivered yesterday and bcs the storage instructions were a bit vague, I called them up. Fridge needs to be between 1-4C. Store on lowest shelf of fridge on a plate and DO NOT COVER. Apparently, it’s the moisture collecting on the skin that grows the bacteria and spoils it. The skin should be shiny and oily not moist/wet so if it is, dry with paper towels/hairdryer if you must

Shh don't tell the OP that a beef carcass usually hangs for 28 days somewhere cool before it's even cut into joints etc. Then quite often those joints are packaged up in atmospheric packaging and another 3 weeks slapped on as a use by date.

And don't get me started on how salami is made Grin

Will be fine to eat OP, the only way it won't be is if at some point in the chain its not been stored properly.

More to the point, don't tell the OP that the 'fresh' turkey could have been slaughtered as early as the beginning of November and then kept in cold storage at -3 degC since then. Every single fresh turkey in the supermarket has the same best before date, but there is no way they were all killed on the same day.

Remember when the food industry said that those 5,000 temporary visas for EU slaughterhouse workers issued in early November was already too late?
