DSis is a fan of true crime and watches lots of docs on Netflix. Are there any true crime books you would recommend?

This is really good: www.amazon.co.uk/Ill-Be-Gone-Dark-Obsessive/dp/0062319787?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Also Truman Capote “In Cold Blood”.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 21/12/2021 19:56

The Jigsaw Man by Paul Britton.

mogkat · 21/12/2021 19:57

I'm reading What Lies Buried by Kerry Daynes and I'd recommend it - if he likes crime programs on tv she's on a few of them as she's a psychologist.

AuntMasha · 21/12/2021 19:58

Everything She Ever Wanted by Ann Rule

Riskybiscuits · 21/12/2021 19:59

Picking Cotton. Absolutely truth stranger than fiction stuff!

CatNamedEaster · 21/12/2021 20:00

The Innocent Man by John Grisham was brilliant and terrifying at the same time. You almost can't believe what you are reading about the investigation/judicial process as it goes on.

AuntMasha · 21/12/2021 20:04

Also,

The Blood of Emmett Till, Timothy B.Tyson

The Real Lolita, Sarah Weinman

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 21/12/2021 20:04

Does she like the ones focussed on the processes involved? If so “No Stone Unturned” by Steve Jackson and Robert K. Ressler’s “Whoever Fights Monsters: My Twenty Years Tracking Serial Killers for the FBI” are both very interesting.

Froppysue · 21/12/2021 20:06

Pure evil by Geoffrey Wansell is a good read. Also Traces by Patricia Wiltshire, Midnight Man.. I’m so bad at author names but if you want I can check my kindle for my recent reads there’s a few good ones on there.

Also not a book rec, but if he loves true crime this is a great buy here

SmallElephant · 21/12/2021 20:12

@StillNoFuckingEyeDeer I thought The Jigsaw Man was really interesting when I read it, but I was a bit shocked when I found out afterwards how wrong he was about the killing of Rachel Nickell - and nearly got an innocent man (Colin Stagg) convicted.

ShirleyBadass · 21/12/2021 20:20

In cold blood absolutely!

ShirleyBadass · 21/12/2021 20:27

Mind hunter is also good. Not particularly well written but interesting.

PermanentTemporary · 21/12/2021 20:28

I just read one of the Manhunt books by Colin Sutton which was a good quick read.

suckingonyulelogs · 21/12/2021 20:35

Cries Unheard by Gitta Sereny - about Mary Bell. Really thought provoking

goldshade · 21/12/2021 20:44

Blatantly following

healthylifestylee · 21/12/2021 21:32

Zodiac

There's also a film about it

chaosrabbitland · 21/12/2021 21:34

any of ann rules books , . sepentine by thomas thompson is brilliant and so is blood and money also by thomas thompson

pinkgin85 · 21/12/2021 21:37

The stranger beside me by Ann Rule is the best one to start with if she hasn't read it all ready, gave so much interesting insight about Ted Bundt and his life. I found it fascinating since Ann knew him personally.

TheOldRazzleDazzle · 21/12/2021 21:44

Another vote for In Cold Blood. Not just a great true crime book, but one of the best books I’ve ever read on any subject. People always remember how Truman Capote became overly fond of one of the killers, but it’s actually really humane and brings the victims back to life.

Joe Cinque’s Consolation - unusual and very depressing Australian murder case, but interesting and well written.

Court No. 1 the Old Bailey - chapters on different famous criminal cases from 1907 onwards that mixes in lots of social history. Very readable.

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher - there’s a reason it was so popular when it came out. Fascinating story well written. The author has written a few others, including The Wicked Boy, which I’ve also read and found gripping.

Did She Kill Him - another Victorian true crime book. Case of a woman accused of poisoning her husband.

Arthur and George - fictionalised telling of a true miscarriage of justice that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle became involved in.

chaosrabbitland · 21/12/2021 22:20

dying dreams by audrey becker and precious victims by don w weber are both good ones as well about paula sims
the death of innocents by richard firstman and jamie talan
echoes in the darkness by joseph wambaugh

cruel deception by gregg olsen
sins of the mother by maria eftimiades

bitter almonds by gregg olsen
the surgeons wife by kieran crowley
