Where and what do you eat on Christmas Eve

Just that really.

We stay in and have a small buffet style tea with cheese and crackers etc.

I always imagine the four of us watching a film together. Truth is non of us like watching the same stuff. I'd watch anything just for us to be together.

DH (as usual) will go to bed to watch tv and either both dds will watch a bit of tv with me or they will go to their rooms to play on their phones. Might play a board game with dd9 but dd11 gets bored way too quickly.

It's my birthday too.

This year we have a lovely seafood platter ordered. I just need to take the cover off it and we can all tuck in.

It will be accompanied by Prosecco. Quite a lot of it. MIL will be here as Boris hasn't banned her this year.

Shallysally · 21/12/2021 19:58

@plixy, Chinese take out here too. Might crack open a bottle of prosecco too, and snuggle with DD to watch our traditional polar express

IntermittentParps · 21/12/2021 20:02

DP and I have a roast on Christmas Eve ( chicken usually, with roast potatoes and something green, plus a couple of nice cold veg/salad things.
Then we have the leftovers on Christmas Day with good bread, cheese, pickles, olives etc. No cooking or hassle.

Dibbydoos · 21/12/2021 20:06

Miller and Carter this year!!! Normally at home having a buffet and watching Christmas films!!!

Shinychestnuts · 21/12/2021 20:10

We're Catholic and follow parents tradition
of fast/feast thing so it's proper home made minestrone soup with melba toast before "midnight" mass at 8pm, followed by crumpets and a snifter or dish of tea when we get home. Soup at table. Crumpets on knees watching Carol's from Kings (recorded). Full works at table on Christmas day obviously.

Thethreecs · 21/12/2021 20:12

I haven't decided yet. We use to always get take away but I got food poisoning one year and ended up so ill for 3 days so after that we did party food, then last year I actually thought, party food is actually awful, it's all very samey. I just don't know what to do this year. We can't go out because new covid rules here in Ireland is pubs and restaurants closed at 8pm plus takeaways if I do go down that route again close by 9pm Christmas eve. Maybe I'll do crisp sandwiches 😂

ponkydonkey · 21/12/2021 20:17

I cook the ham! And buttery Mash gravalax Pickles and cheese

Lovely

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 21/12/2021 20:17

We go to family for a lunchtime buffet then in the evening the children normally just have something simple eg sandwiches, toastie etc. DH and I eat after they are asleep with a glass of mulled wine and carols at kings. Normally a cheeseboard or m and s party food but this year we are hopefully having a seafood platter if it arrives!

Tayegete · 21/12/2021 20:25

We always have brunch in the nearest city and go for a walk/ visit somewhere and then come home and have bread and Camenbert followed by chocolate log and then watch a Xmas film - usually elf.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 21/12/2021 20:36

We do party food tea. A whole load of various strange combos of freezer party foods in a range of shades of brown and beige.

Anyone fancy a plate of mini toad in the holes, chilli cheese bites, duck spring rolls, mini crumpets with ham and cheese on..........

WhiskersPete · 21/12/2021 20:43

This year we are having a massive tomahawk steak with bearnaise sauce, chips and all the trimmings. Plus a bottle of champagne to wash it down with. Very extravagant.

Fallible · 21/12/2021 20:49

Some good ones here.

Dh and I generally have to work Christmas eve so its business as usual til the kids bedtime.

We do try to have a Bailey's together once the presents are all under the tree and everything is organised for the morning though.

SpanielsAreMyLife · 21/12/2021 20:51

We do all the veg prep on christmas eve, and have pizzas/nachos and cheese/crackers for food. Anything simple and easy as a rule!

And our DDs usually end up eating a small mountain of chocolate.

LeftieLucy · 21/12/2021 20:53

Tartiflette if I can be bothered. Gammon and mash if I can’t 😂

AfterEightMintyCedric · 21/12/2021 21:01

Since we've been in our own place DD and I have a tradition of baked camembert on Christmas Eve.

This year I've got truffle flavoured pigs in blankets to go with it and am going to bake it in a puff pastry snowflake...half filled with cranberry sauce and spinach, and half with fig chutney and sprinkled with walnuts. We'll have celery and grapes too so we feel a tiny bit virtuous, then popcorn and a Christmas movie.

heymammy · 21/12/2021 21:05

We go in to town and mooch around the xmas Market then have dinner out somewhere. They used to set up an ice skating rink in the centre but haven't done it for a good few years now, miss it loads!

We decided to do this when the older two were really young so that we weren't hanging around the house all day waiting for them to go to bed 😄 now they are 15 & 18 and the youngest is 9 so we're still doing it but I think eldest might make her own plans next year.

Gatehouse77 · 21/12/2021 21:07

We eat together in the evening, lasagna this year, and then do Christmas stories and tree biscuits round the Christmas tree. Recently, the kids have gone out with friends (restrictions allowing) after that and DH and I have wrapped presents and filled stockings.

When they were younger (all young adults now) we’d have supper by candlelight, bath and hair wash then back downstairs (massive treat in our household) for hot chocolate, Christmas stories and tree biscuits and they’d hang their stockings up. Teeth and bed!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/12/2021 21:11

It just me and tween Dd. 'm taking her to her Dad's in the morning to see her new sister, then going to the panto - tickets gifted to me by my boss as they can't go - which is a nice surprise. Then home, to watch Encanto which will be streaming on Disney+ with cheese crackers and some nice picky bits. DDs too old for Christmas eve boxes or following the Santa tracker etc now but I think it'll still be a nice evening, she tends to out herself to bed between 8:30-9pm so I'll finish wrapping the presents and I might make myself a SoCo.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/12/2021 21:15

DDs also asked for a drum kit this year so I got her an electronic one, I'm still not decided whether I'm going to put it up or leave it in the box. I can still remember the year I stayed up to put together the giant dolls house or the other year when it was the playmobil hospital, I don't really fancy reliving either experience.

whiteonesugar · 21/12/2021 21:18

We used to get chinese takeaway every year but for the last 6/7 years we’ve had ‘picky bits’ like salami, cheese, olives etc and this year I think I’ll make sausage rolls too. Yum.

Itstheprinciple · 21/12/2021 21:25

For the last 5 years or so (not last year obviously) we have gone out for a meal in the afternoon, not fancy, just our local pub so no one has to drive. We couldn't get in there this year as fully booked so we are going to my favourite Italian. Before that we used to have gammon, chips and egg.

Itstheprinciple · 21/12/2021 21:25

We save the picky bits for Christmas night and boxing day.

AnneElliott · 21/12/2021 21:26

We go out for an Indian with the same group of friends - it's a nice chilled evening before the main day.

DiscontentedWoman · 21/12/2021 21:27

We have aromatic crispy duck, with pancakes and the usual spring onion and cucumber. From the supermarket rather than the takeaway, just for ease. Everyone always enjoys it.

LibbyL92 · 21/12/2021 21:32

We have a few drinks down the local at about 5pm. Indian booked for 7pm :)

Been the tradition since I was a little girl!
