Ideas for giving money without giving cash?

I've bought adult DSs new wallets and whilst I'll be adding some small amount of cash for luck (I've no idea why, I'm not superstitious etc but my DM has drummed all these things into me and can't not do them!) I want to give them money for Christmas. I can't see the point of me going and getting cash for them to most likely have to go pay it into their account when I can just transfer it anyway.

So do I just write an IOU/note and pop it in or has anyone got any other ideas?

Cheque?
Most banks you can pay them in on the banking app below a certain amount.

I'd just do a transfer and put a note I'm the wallet.

I have got Moonpig cards which I’ve personalised to say eg no money in this card, sorry because I’ve transferred it today! And I’ve set auto payments for the 25th for them.

Oh gosh I have no idea if I even have cheques anymore.

Yeah think it will have to be a note, just thought someone might have a genius idea but I didn't know that about cheques so a good shout thank you Smile

That's nice @PeaceONoeuf. They are both students and apart from booze and snacks, most of their gifts are necessities (pants/socks/t-shirts etc) so just trying to make it a bit less transactional if that makes sense?

I just need to get out of the mindset of trying to have Christmas like they are 6. Grin

Yes that makes sense - the cards are nice because they are funny and personalised - we found a sad face one looking at your January balance and the sorry one. Just a bit less bald than a wad of notes

Last year (or year before?) I bought the teens wallets, taped a £1 coin to a card sized piece of paper inside and wrote something like ‘there’s £99 more of me in your account’

FelicityBeedle · 18/12/2021 23:05

You have to have some silver in the wallets though, whatever you do!

Pixiedust1234 · 18/12/2021 23:24

I have been wondering how to do this too. It doesn't seem like a gift if you just transfer it so maybe a fancy iou note is the way to go. Idk, i still don't like that idea though Sad

We did a note attached to a helium balloon that floated up when you opened the box for Dbro birthday.

@PeaceONoeuf I'm on the Christmas board looking for ideas VERY late in the day mainly as dd keeps saying she just wants money

Op I hope it's ok to kinda hijack your thread a little ss is also a student it's a very tricky stage isn't it?

loopylindi · 18/12/2021 23:53

you know the saying (to children) that money doesn't grow on trees......well - buy small trees, wrap up coins/ folded notes like little pressies and hang as decorations with a little poem !!

Justkeeppedaling · 19/12/2021 00:07

What about some vouchers? So a Costa voucher, supermarket voucher, clothes shop voucher etc?

ElephantOfRisk · 19/12/2021 00:21

It is a tricky age and some lovely ideas here, thank you.

I was probably a bit late thinking about it but I've just ordered a couple of sixpences from the Royal Mint to take care of the silver element. They also had some nice bigger coins at about the £20-£25 mark and lots suitable for younger kids too.

Posts in 3-5 working days so it is possible they'll arrive before Christmas - maybe...

Vouchers is a good idea for teens but DS1 would let them expire and DS2 likely to lose them. I'm also still a wee bit wary in case places go bust. Ds2 lives away so I could do him some supermarket cards but again, he'd likely lose or forget about them (he is dyspraxic so does have a bit of an excuse).

I think DS1 might be a bit impressed if I gave him a little bit of gold bullion but back to DS2 likely to lose that.

My mom was like this when my best friend, cousins and I were teenagers:

Bills rolled into toilet paper
Bathrobe with money in pocket and pinned around like bows
Money bowties
The infamous bouquet of roses that were gorgeous folded dollars for graduations
Picture frames with money faces
And loads of poems and stories printed out with money faces

It is a bit easier with USD that slippery GBP but you get the idea!

If you have boys you can get the Linx, wrap £50 around it, print out a linx cat as an overlay with the Queen's face showing through (or whoever is on the back)- like a rebrand.

Ha ha. My DD is going to think I've started this thread. I have bought teenage GS a wallet. I want to put vouchers in it. Does anyone know if you can get them for Subway or KFC ? I'm also putting in some random coins. I've got a Victorian penny, a thruppeny bit, and a silver sixpence. Easy to get them, it only took an hour to prise open DHs wallet Xmas Grin

PeaceONoeuf · 19/12/2021 05:26

@Graphista I just searched on money and then checked I could personalise them. Tbh if they just want money I don’t see any point in not giving it to them.

Make a cheque? Follow the link, click on the picture and then print it out, fill it in but set the money to transfer.
