Fraser Fir.

Norway Spruce, for a traditional look and a beautiful smell. They are always the cheapest too! Some people say they drop more needles than other types, but I don't find that, as long as you keep them watered.

Fraser Fir if you have the cash to spend cos it lasts, looks the part and doesn't drop needles. A Nordmann Fir if you want a soft needled, non-dropper that will last. Mine is soooo soft and pretty this year that I keep touching it! Their downside is that the top foot of tree sometimes isn't as impressive. It's a couple of thin branches coming off one straight up.

Norway Spruces look nice but are jaggy wee bastards and drop needles. Not enough to ruin the look of the tree for quite some time but DH and I have a game to see who will find the last needle. They've been appearing for two years now, despite regular cleaning. The little sods just ended up stuck under furniture and occasionally one will pop out when you move the tv stand or sideboard to clean.

Douglas firs smell amazing, but not very strong branches

I prefer a Fraser over a Nordman.

Fraser fir for me.

I will be getting a Norway spruce this year as we are getting our tree very late, so I'm not too worried about needle drop. It has the best smell IMO.

If I'm getting a tree earlier I usually get a non drop variety.

I think it depends on a few things - what size you're looking for, how long you want the tree to be up, conditions in your room.

We always have a 10 ft tall Nordmann that's usually pretty wide and is put up a few days before Christmas in a room that's not used much so not always heated.

Then also a Fraser Fir that we put up earlier in a much smaller space in a room that's used more so fairly warm. They definitely last longer and branches don't droop but are smaller in size.

I like the ones that have the Christmas tree smell but as we keep ours up til Jan 6th, I have swerved away from them since there was an alternative.

But I looked at them longingly in the garden centre today - they looked different, like Christmas trees from my childhood (which were basically bald by 12th night).

Someone needs to cross breed the non-drop type with beautifully fragranced trees - and make a fortune!
