I don't want turkey!

It's 'just us' this year. No parents to please and the kids are young enough that they don't care what's for dinner.

I don't want to do turkey, I want something that's a bit special, but easy to do. Like Beef Wellington, but easier. I think I still want all the veg / pigs in blankets usual stuff, but could be persuaded otherwise.

Can you hit me up with your ideas and preferably tried and tested recipes please!

My guess would be Boursin @StopGo

Morrisons have this easy carve duck, which looks nice, and you could have all the usual side dishes with it.

Doje · 16/12/2021 18:56

Well, plot twist everyone. I've just bought this up over dinner and DH has offered to cook Christmas dinner! Fabulous.

SDTG I think you've won the thread for me. That looks like a nice centrepiece, easy and most importantly, I have a Christmas (-ish, the 21st) delivery slot booked with Morrisons! I'm off to show it to DH now to convince him. (Me, controlling?! Never. 😐)

I love turkey. #missingthepoint

chantico · 16/12/2021 19:28

@StopGo Oh my dreadful typing! Sorry!

Stilton (or any blue cheese)

Like this:

But I bake mine in the oven rather than fry them

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2021 19:29

We’re not

Ds wants lobster! Need to look into it

SevenSteps · 16/12/2021 19:33

Would go with either pork, beef or capon.

There are three of us for lunch this year. DD is the cook. She's a long time vegitarian. I don't like turkey and I'm quite nearly a pescatarian (the odd bacon sandwich let's me down) and DDs partner wants meat.

DDs decision is that I will have salmon (thanks to mumsnet for the exact recipe), her partner will have a Barnsley Chop and DD will decide during next week.

When I voiced concerns that that meant DD was cooking three meals, she said mine and partners were easy to do on the day, and hers would probably be made the day before, along with sides that can be preped the day before.

So I would say, go for what you like, as long as the cook is ok with that

We had goose years ago & it was lovely, more moist than turkey. Think we’re having spiced beef this year ( will come back with the recipe)

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 16/12/2021 20:07

We had goose one year it was lovely although expensive.

We usually have turkey and gammon.

Roast beef for new year's Day!

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 16/12/2021 20:09

We have duck with Delia Smith's cherry and red wine sauce. The sauce is soooo easy to make - it's pretty much just cherry jam mixed with red wine and heated up. No effort and tastes delicious. And now I'm hungry Grin.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/12/2021 20:09

We have glazed gammon every year, family demands it (I love turkey and buy a crown just for me. They all say they don’t like it but it mysteriously seems to finish in the fridge Grin).
We had takeaway curry last year. That was pretty good.

We have a ham, lovely Mary Berry marinade

witsendeverytime · 17/12/2021 13:07

I love turkey but as a guest I've had goose and partridge.
My son made beef wellington and have to say his first try was amazing, so it's not too hard. Get really good beef.

Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 17/12/2021 17:38

We do duck

Enb76 · 17/12/2021 17:42

We have venison. Used to be goose but the amount of fat that comes out of a goose is insane. Venison for 17 took under an hour to prep and cook. So you can spend the time on the frills.

DelurkingAJ · 17/12/2021 17:42

We have the M&S beef wrapped in prosciutto. Means DSs get Yorkshire pudding. We also do gammon and pigs in blankets and feast like kings on leftovers until New Year!

cultkid · 17/12/2021 17:43

We are having rib of beef

VetOnCall · 17/12/2021 20:17

Most of my family have turkey but I almost always have venison for Christmas dinner. I prefer the turkey in a sandwich later on.

felulageller · 17/12/2021 20:26

Salmon en croute
Multi stuffed fish
Mushroom Wellington
Pheasant
Venison
Pigeon pie
Aromatic duck

PoinsettaPrincess · 17/12/2021 20:34

We don’t have a traditional roast, it’s just the two of us on Christmas Day. This year it’s balsamic onion and goats cheese tart followed by a seafood platter.
