Christmas Day meal of "picky bits"

Do any of you do this instead of a full roast? What sort of things do you have? I've never done it but the idea has taken my fancy this year. I'm thinking stuffing balls, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, maybe even red cabbage or sprouts... so I guess most of the trimmings but not the meat. Is this a silly idea? Are there any other things that would go well, perhaps chicken tenders?

We do 'party food' usually, you know, frozen Indian snack selection, spring rolls, tempura prawns and stuff. Whack a tray or 2 in the oven periodically throughout the day and graze. Also got to have oodles of cheese and a prawn ring!

Team picky bits over here. I often use that phrase and I’m not even sorry.

Also, eat what you like on Christmas Day! I reckon those bits with some gravy to dip the roasties and pigs in blankets in sounds great. Just call it a ‘fork buffet’ and you’ll be grand

@Avarua

The term 'picky bits' reminds me of scabs.
Same. I am also very mentally visual and I always see a woman picking scabs off and eating them whenever I read "picky bits". It's actually pretty upsetting.

Wow this sounds like a helluva lot of work and way too much food!
Fuck me, there's even mumsnet competitive undereaters on a Xmas day buffet thread 🤣🤣

That's funny OP I usually do a full traditional dinner but due to some inspiration on here and a discussion with my DP we have come up with many reasons to do exactly what you're planning too.

We're mainly doing a Christmassy spread, and although it might be a bit weird I am including all of the things I would miss from skipping a full meal, so am make roast potatoes, roast parsnips, sprouts and bread sauce. Then we will have sliced meat, pigs in blankets and nice party food like mini yorkshire puddings, hog roast bites, etc. Lots of sauces - gravy, cranberry sauce, horseradish, etc.

Just going to prepare everything I need to the day ahead and then bung everything in the oven on the day, I'm so looking forward to having much more free time! No worrying about timings, 7 pots of veg boiling away, etc.

I thought “picky bits” (my eyes!!!) had been banned from MN permanently!

It’s all very well saying “I knew they’d be a pile on” but just don’t do it!
