What constitutes a Christmas dinner?

What does your meal contain? Starter, main and dessert, especially the main meal? Do you include Yorkshire’s, brocolli? Or are these just for roast dinners?

We have;
Lentil soup and crusty bread.
Turkey, ham, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, sweetcorn, sausage meat stuffing and Yorkshire pudding.
Cheesecake with cream

StrongCoffeAvalanche · 14/12/2021 21:57

Starter: booze

Main: turkey, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, variety of veg for the whole family - parsnips, Brussels sprouts, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans. Cranberry sauce and loads of gravy.

Dessert: selection of Christmas pudding and sticky toffee pudding with custard and ice cream.

InTheLabyrinth · 14/12/2021 22:00

No starter.
Turkey, brussel sprouts, stuffing (forcemeat and sausage), roast potatoes. Probably carrots. Gravey and cranberry jelly.
Bread sauce and parsnips if at my Mums. Rice if at PiL.
Crackers (of the gunpowder variety, not the with cheese ones).

Christmas pudding or stocking chocolate.

Ajollyhappysoul · 14/12/2021 22:16

Does anyone have breaded garlic mushrooms for starter or is that weird and when would you have sausages in bacon, if you have them?

Jumpingintochristmas · 14/12/2021 22:19

We do canapés and gin fizz cocktails on arrival (just M&S party food ones) instead of a starter.

Main is turkey, ham, sausage meat stuffing, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, dauphinois potatoes, braised red cabbage, Savoy cabbage, Brussels with panchetta, honey glazed carrots and gravy.

Dessert choices this year are trifle, individual chocolate soufflés or Christmas pudding.

Later at night it’s cheeseboard, Christmas cake and port.

No mushrooms here but pigs in blankets with main.

The key is have whatever makes you happy!

Ellieboolou33 · 14/12/2021 22:23

No starters usually here.

Turkey, gammon, sausage meat stuffing, roast parsnips, peas, carrots, sprouts, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and Yorkshire pudding's, gravy and cranberry sauce.

Pudding's
chocolate Yule log, mince pie / pudding with double cream and maybe a cheesecake (yes we are all very greedy) 🤣

sadpapercourtesan · 14/12/2021 22:23

We don't do starters. I can't understand why people want to spoil their appetites with soup/pate when there's Christmas dinner to eat.

We have turkey, cranberry sauce, roast potatoes, mash, sprouts, roast parsnips, carrot/swede mash with sherry in it, pigs in blankets and gravy.

Followed by Christmas pudding with brandy butter and extra thick double cream.

Followed by coffee, mint chocolate selection and Turkish Delight

sadpapercourtesan · 14/12/2021 22:23
  • and stuffing, obviously!
CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 14/12/2021 22:24

Starter: none

Main. Turkey. Gammon. Roast potatoes. Carrots. Parsnips. Pigs in blankets (sausages wrapped in bacon). Sprouts. Carrot and swede mash. Peas. Stuffing. Usually some other veg but I can't for the life of me remember what. With gravy and whatever sauces people want.

Dessert: mince pies. Christmas pudding. Profiteroles or similar. With cream and homemade brandy butter. (Dessert is usually a couple of hours after dinner)

Seafog · 14/12/2021 22:24

In our house it's
Nuts, cheeses, snacks, and craft beer for starters, then turkey, stuffing, some form of potatoes, ginger honeyed carrots, cauliflower and broccoli with a cheese sauce, green beans and almonds, turnip loaf, gravy, cranberry sauce, and a loaf of crusty bread.

For dessert we have mince pies, pumpkin pies, apple pies, ice cream and whipped cream
Usually a few plates of cookies and squares, bars, and balls.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 14/12/2021 22:25

No starter.

Turkey or goose, roast potatoes, roasted parsnips with honey, Brussel sprouts, carrots, peas, mashed swede (lots of butter) green cabbage pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce.

Pudding is traditional variety or cake and custard of some kind.

Wine for the grownups, but I like beer. Teenager has watered down wine or pop.

Mince pies, then resume on the chocolate until stuffed.

Main
Turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roast potatoes, carrot, parsnips, pigs in blanket and sprouts

We have a choice of prawn cocktail with smoked salmon or melon and fruit to start.

Main course we have turkey, sausage meat stuffing, sage and onion stuffing, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, mash, honey roast carrots and parsnips, cabbage as no one like Brussels sprouts, then all the the sauces - gravy, cranberry, bread sauce etc.

Dessert my husband usually makes sticky toffee pudding couple of days before.

Largethighsbadeyes · 14/12/2021 22:29

No starter (or on the odd occasion we have had prawn cocktail which is so 70s but I don't care I love it)

Main - turkey, roast ham, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots , gravy, stuffing, pigs in blankets, mashed carrot.

Dessert - none (anyone who has room for dessert isn't doing Christmas Dinner right IMO 🤣)

Evening snack - left overs, turkey sandwiches

Largethighsbadeyes · 14/12/2021 22:30

I forgot sprouts...lots of them

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/12/2021 22:31

No starter. It's just too much with a big meal.

Christmas Dinner- turkey, pigs in blankets, stuffing, honey roasted parsnips, carrots, Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese, mashed and roast potatoes. Whatever sauce people fancy - bread, cranberry, mint.

Pudding- Christmas pudding or apple crumble or ice cream. Christmas pudding and apple crumble can custard, cream or ice cream.

Scbchl · 14/12/2021 22:33

I can't believe so many people don't have starters.. its the only time of the year we have three courses. But we are in Scotland and its in the evening we eat not afternoon.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 14/12/2021 22:33

SPROUTS! I forgot sprouts.

Drink options- fizzy, white or rose wine. I hate red so if anyone wants that they need to bring it. Also, Shloer, squash, pepsi etc.

katienana · 14/12/2021 22:34

Starter: M&S salmon terrine
Main: turkey, pigs in blankets (I make my own with full size chipolatas not cocktail sausages), stuffing (buy from m&s), roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, sprouts, carrots, roast parsnips, gravy, cranberry sauce.
Dessert Christmas pudding with brandy sauce (buy both of these).
Also lots of Champagne 🍾

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 14/12/2021 22:35

Don’t really do a starter. (Ex mil used to do soup and a prawn cocktail.. I’d be full before the main reached the table!)

Last year for main I did chicken stuffed with sage, onion and breadcrumb stuffing, and covered with streaky bacon, roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, sweet potato casserole, sautéed cabbage, broccoli and Yorkshire puddings.

I’m taking puddings to my friend’s this year. I’m doing pumpkin pie, mince pies, chocolate brownies, whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

That’s a completely fine starter if that’s what you fancy, a starter can be whatever you like.

Pigs in blankets (sausages in bacon) are usually served with the main, with the turkey, veg, stuffing etc Smile
