Theres a couple 'buy a gift for a child in need' schemes by me, they always seem to only have older boys left whenever I join them. All the boys in my family are under 5 (or over 40!) so I feel a bit clueless & looking for some suggestions of things that might be suitable, when the only thing really known is age. Thanks!

Do you not get any indication of what they like?

I'd be tempted to get a voucher.

Stompy I think the OP means they are buying a present for a child that they have never met.

Lego sets.
Nice toiletries with wash bag to store them in.
Puzzle/crossword books (+ some nice pens to use with it).
Manga colouring books with nice pens.
Books - for older teens maybe get a classic like Sherlock Holmes or easy to read fiction like Dan Brown or someone.
I wouldn't get vouchers (either for online or ones to use in stores) because the child might have no access to internet or be able to get to any shops.
I also wouldn't get anything that needs batteries because they may not be able to get more.

Also Beano annual is always a nice bit of fun.

Yes, I understood that. Most schemes share some sort of info about what the child likes though.

I would get a hat (Nike or Adidas etc), socks, Lynx, Chocolate, wallet.

Branded if at all possible so they get to have the same sort of stuff as their friends. I would hazard a guess that the teen boys who receive those gifts never get a chance to have “cool” things like other teenage boys do.

Thank you, some good insight there, especially about branded items. The ine im doing thus year is just name (may not be real) & age.
I did one last year where you given an idea (ie crafts, stationary, cosmetics, dinosaurs etc) - however mine was 'gift voucher' (I do totally understand a teen desiring to pick their own stuff, but did feel a bit flat - I think as theres probably loads of people of all ages who would like "a bit of money" in some form, but to me it feels a bit different to providing a child a physical gift).

@Confuuuzed
Thank you for doing this. I work with children who are in refuges and we are always given so many lovely things for the younger children and girls especially. Those teenage boys are often overlooked. There are some great ideas here.

Bluetooth speakers have gone done well, sweets, and yes branded socks/beanie hats etc.

Art supplies are great too, nice sketchbooks and pencils.

Gifts seem to have a different kind of impact on these kids, they are more aware and attuned that what they are being given is a strangers generosity. They make a huge difference to their lives. Again, thank you.
